If you are so stuck on the 2024 Olympics Just like me — that is, you keep finding your face literally inches from the TV screen — you may have noticed some fierce competition at my favorite unofficial event: nail game.
The shiny new sets and finishes on display in Paris would be impressive in any context, but cutting through the air in the middle of competition? Iconic. Sure, we expect athletes to look polished for the Opening Ceremonies, but a hint of glam on the court, gym, pool or track just feels different. We’re seeing a superhuman take on custom coffin acrylics (???), neon tips that are no match for chlorine, and patriotic nail art that makes us want to stand up and salute.
The road to the Olympics can be punishing, so we always love to see an athlete having fun and showing off a little personal style on the world stage. It’s amazing how much character and personality a great manicure can convey. While I have a lot of questions about how exactly you can grip a barbell or a tennis racket with grips, I’m still really enjoying the display of Olympic Village. (It probably helps that all athletes have access to on-site glam in Paris.)

1. Jordan Chiles, United States, Artistic Gymnastics
Chiles gave an impressive performance on the uneven bars with this set. Meanwhile, I have been known to break a nail while grocery shopping.
