Power source
Toys can be rechargeable, plug-in, or battery-powered. “Most toys seem to be rechargeable these days, but I recommend having at least one in your arsenal that’s battery-powered because no one wants to run out of juice when they’re ‘so close’ and then have to wait two hours for it to charge again,” says Shannon. “Keep a few extra batteries in your sex toy drawer so you’re always ready for another go.” Battery-powered toys are also great for travel—you can just take the batteries out and you don’t have to worry about them turning on in your bag. Plug-in toys can also be useful for the same reasons, though the cord can sometimes get in the way and you can’t always reach where you want it to.

“Most toys have more modes than you’ll ever need or use,” Shannon says. “So overall, I think the number of vibration patterns is more of a marketing tool than a pleasure tool.” Most people use the consistent vibration mode, she says, so focus on the intensity options and design of the actual toy as you shop. “Think ahead of time about what situations you might want to use a new toy in (bath, doggy style, travel, etc.) and look for features and a design that work well in that situation,” Shannon says.
Shape and size
