Britain is expected to be deluged by torrential rain which could cause flash flooding across the country, as winds of up to 60mph are forecast.

THE Met Office warned of a unstable period on the horizon for many from today (October 18) with Met Eireann, the Irish Met Officeofficially naming it Storm Ashley.

BBC The weather forecast also lists 189 locations where rivers threaten to overflow as water levels rise significantly. The Environment Agency has issued 146 flood alerts in England, 25 in Scotland and 18 in Wales.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “A period of strong south to south-easterly winds is likely over the west of Scotland on Friday morning until early afternoon, before easing and turn southwest throughout the afternoon.

“Wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph are possible fairly widely for some time, and perhaps beyond 60 mph in more exposed locations. Given the wind direction and high spring tides, some disruptions are possible.
