A goose in the city of Mars, Cambridgeshirehas stunned locals after he was photographed calmly using a pedestrian crossing in the busy city centre.

The goose, part of a flock that lived near the Nene River for over 11 years, was seen crossing the street safely, stopping traffic.

Charlie Bedford, 67, captured the funny moment after spotting the bird as it walked towards the newly installed zebra crossing on Broad Street.

“I thought, ‘Oh no, he’s going to get run over,’ but calm as usual, he went straight to the crosswalk and got out.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Bedford said BBC.

The goose, now affectionately nicknamed “Gary”, caused drivers to stop as it crossed, oblivious to the attention it was attracting.

The image quickly went viral on social media, with locals sharing similar stories about the geese who have become familiar figures in the area. Some residents even claimed to have seen geese using crosswalks elsewhere in the city.

The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) commented on the unusual sight, saying that although birds like seagulls are known to wander into shops, they had “never seen geese doing this”.
