Munich – Two weeks ago the Isar in Munich was still a wild river. The flood reached on June 4. a level of 3.66 meters, from 3.80 meters reporting level 3 is declared. Fortunately, we were spared that, partly because of Munich is simply better prepared for flood situations. The river in the city center has now reached a fairly comfortable depth of 1.34 metres. The level has slowly dropped again, but the thermometer has risen to as high as 30 degrees Celsius. It goes without saying that Munich residents not only want to relax in the outdoor pool, but also on their beloved city river. This is actually very clear: as the Isar opens up the gravel banks again, more and more people appear on its banks. This way you can sunbathe, grill and even swim. And not just the little toe.
Opaque location: branches in brown water
But is it currently advisable or even safe to go to Isar? After all, the flood has not been that long ago and in some places the river looks more like the Reissende or at least a surfer’s paradise rather than a local recreation area, the water is darker green than Isar clear and one or two larger branches float there eventually to Downtown.
Current even stronger than normal
Instead of continuing to fish in murky waters for a long time, we asked the city. The Ministry of Climate and Environmental Protection issues a clear warning, but without a ban. There are still “dangers to be expected.” Additionally, the building department is currently repairing flood damage; known bathing areas may not be usable as the course of the River Isar may have changed as a result of the flooding. Also important information: “The current is even stronger than normal”. So if you don’t want to get to know the trees in the water or are afraid that you won’t be able to find the exit or just want to enjoy life in general, you can just wait a little longer before swimming in the Isar. This also applies to sailing. The department advises caution and “increased caution.” So what’s the bottom line? Just common sense, dear people of Munich. Keep this in mind when enjoying the warm days outside. The water can wait a little longer.
