It is almost considered a certainty that the Chicago Bears will take University of Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft next week.

Williams headlines a very attractive draft class, which includes quarterbacks Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy, as well as a number of talented wide receivers and offensive linemen.

But James Jones has a concern about Williams that he voiced on FS1’s “Speak”; namely, the fact that many of Williams’ plays in college were “off-schedule” and that he didn’t stick to his team’s patterns often enough.

Surely, Williams’ ability to ad-lib plays is a strength of his, but it can be a double-edged sword when someone relies on it too much.

As Jones pointed out, assuming he gets drafted by Chicago, he will have two very capable and reliable wide receivers to throw the football to in DJ Moore and Keenan Allen, and he won’t have to try to make plays or win games by himself.

Williams put up outstanding passing numbers in his two seasons with the Trojans while rushing for 21 touchdowns, and many feel he has a real chance to be a generational talent in the NFL.

If he does, the Bears will have the type of all-around talent they haven’t had since perhaps the mid-1980s, which was the last time they won the Super Bowl championship.

They also happen to have an up-and-coming defense, and they could very well make the playoffs this coming season if Williams plays well from the get-go.
