Asgard Unveils THOR, the First DDR5 CUDIMM to Date, with Speeds of Up to 9600 MT/s

Asgard’s latest THOR DDR5 CUDIMM memory kit has been revealed, offering groundbreaking speeds of up to 9600 MT/s.

Asgard Today, Intel Corp. announced its latest DDR5 memory, pushing the speed limits of existing high-speed DDR5 RAMs. The new RAM kit is the Thor DDR5 9600 MT/s, featuring CL44 timings and replacing its predecessor that could reach up to 9200 MT/s. The Thor DDR5-9600 MT/s CL44 is a CUDIMM memory, which improves signal integrity over regular DIMMs.

CUDIMM stands for Clocked Unbuffered Dual In-Line Memory Module, which uses a CKD (Clock Driver) to regenerate the clock signal to improve stability and help RAM modules reach higher frequencies. This is exactly what the Thor DDR5 9600 MT/s achieves, making it the fastest DDR5 RAM kit in terms of memory speed at the moment.

According to the enterprise (via @9550pro), CKD on Thor DDR5 RAM modules eliminates bottlenecks by improving signal transmission between the CPU and DRAM. The Asgard Thor RAM kit can be seen running at 4800 MT/s, which translates to a speed of 9600 MT/s since Intel CPUs run RAM clock in 2:1 mode. The CPU-z window shows all the crucial information about the Asgard Thor memory, such as its DRAM manufacturer, which is SK Hynix, and the CAS latency.

DDR5 9600 MT/s at CL 44 is roughly equivalent to DDR5 6400 MT/s memory running at CL 30, which is impressive since users will now have higher bandwidth as well. Asgard says it has released a new memory kit for the latest AMD and Intel platforms that can support much higher clock speeds than its predecessors. Interestingly, the demo shows the memory kit running in Gear 2 mode, but it doesn’t mention what motherboard or CPU it was running with.

We have recently seen how ASRock’s Z890 Taichi can support up to 9200 MT/s DDR5 RAM speed, which is approximately 2000 MT/s faster than the Z790 Taichi. Upcoming Intel platforms will support even higher RAM speeds, and Asgard has announced that it plans to release 10,000 MT/s memory soon and will exceed that limit soon. Lexar has also unveiled its next-generation CUDIMM design with speeds up to 9600 MT/s at Computex.

Aesthetically, the RAM modules will be available in two different colors: Polar Night Black and Lightning Silver. The heatsinks on the modules won’t be very tall, as can be seen in the photos, but they should dissipate heat quickly for better thermals. Through Intel XMP support, the Asgard Thor will be able to achieve optimized settings and will run at just 1.5V.

Asgard adds that they are using third-generation JEDEC-compliant chips, which will ensure better compatibility and reliability on the new platforms.
