At least 16 dead in fire in high-rise buildings in China

Beijing

At least 16 people have died in a fire in a high-rise building in China. As reported by the official Xinhua news agency, the fire broke out on Wednesday night (local time) in a 14-story building in the southwestern Chinese city of Zigong (Sichuan province). According to initial investigations, the fire in a department store was caused by construction work in a part of the building.

Video footage published by Chinese Internet portal ‘The Paper’ showed a building surrounded by thick smoke. People were standing on the roof waiting to be rescued. As Xinhua reported, rescue work has been completed. No more people are trapped.
