Joshua Buatsi and Willy Hutchinson’s fight was disrupted by a technical failure on the Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois undercard.
In the middle of a light heavyweight bout, the lights at Wembley Stadium went out forcing the referee to temporarily stop the match.
Both boxers were confused when the ring went dark in the eighth round.
Luckily, the lights soon came back on and the two men got right back to work.
After three decent – but not thrilling – opening fights Hutchinson vs Buatsi brought the packed crowd in the British capital to their feet.
The fight came alive in the sixth round when Buatsi dropped Hutchinson with a sustained attack to the body.
Hutchinson appeared to lose concentration for a moment and was peppered with left hooks to the liver.
Entering the seventh round, the Scottish fighter went on the attack again and paralyzed Buatsi’s legs with a series of hooks.
However, his good work was marred by a points deduction for leading with his head.
In the ninth round, Buatsi again sank Hutchinson with another hard body shot.
But, to his credit, the Carstairs man got back to his feet and went back to fighting fire with fire.
But in the end, it wasn’t enough to get his hand raised and Buatsi was awarded a split decision.
It appeared Buatsi had done more than enough to win the contest given the two knockdowns and point deduction.
However, one judge scored it 113-112 for his win, while the other two referees scored it 117-108 and 115-110 for his win.
As a result, Buatsi was crowned the new WBO ‘interim’ light heavyweight champion and it is now the alphabet body’s obligation for the winner Artur Beterbiev oppose Dmitry Bivol on October 12th.
Buatsi moved up to 19-0 while Hutchinson dropped to 18-2.
British boxing fans will be hoping the long-awaited all-British fight with Anthony Yarde can happen next.
It was originally intended for this card but Yarde parted ways with Queensberry Promotions which caused problems.
