BERLIN taz | At its party conference, the CDU spoke out in favor of a gradual reintroduction of military service. “We will gradually withdraw the suspension of military conscription,” said a motion for the basic program, which party delegates approved by a large majority on Tuesday. Accordingly, the CDU wants to introduce a “compulsory social year” that women and men can also complete as service in the Bundeswehr. “Until this is implemented, we call for the introduction of mandatory military service to strengthen the Bundeswehr’s workforce readiness.”

The application arose from a proposal by the Junge Union and was a counter-proposal to the originally proposed resolution. With the call for temporary military service, the CDU envisions a project based on the Scandinavian model, where entire generations must be drafted, but young men and women are only drafted based on the needs of the Bundeswehr.

The original draft of the party leadership initially only talked about a mandatory year of service, which would have included the possibility of serving in the Bundeswehr, but according to the statements of the rank and file deputies, this could only have been introduced at a certain point. late time. After a heated debate at the party congress, the Junge Union was able to triumph with its plan.

The CDU meets in Berlin for a three-day conference. After party leader Friedrich Merz was confirmed in office on Monday with 90 percent and the federal government was re-elected, the party congress on Tuesday will discuss a new basic program. The CDU would like to prepare for this year’s election campaigns.
