It’s no secret that the New England Patriots have been begging for quarterback stability since Tom Brady’s departure.
They drafted Mac Jones, hoping he could provide a spark, but it was evident early that he wasn’t their future at the position.
After trading Jones away in the offseason, the Patriots have all but confirmed they will take a quarterback with their third overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Dan Orlovsky and Mina Kimes recently discussed this decision, and Orlovsky provided the team with a cautionary tale.
“I’m okay with you taking a quarterback in the top five at three, but you have to break the mold of, oh, well, he’s a top-five pick, so we’re gonna play him,” Orlovsky said.
On this week’s pod, @DanOrlovsky7 and I discussed the likelihood that New England drafts a QB at 3, and whether the Patriots should consider sitting that player behind Jacoby Brissett for a year.

“You can’t take a quarterback and expect him to play and play well within the first year or two,” Orlovsky added.
It has been a growing trend among the NFL’s worst teams to draft a quarterback early and roll them out as their starter right away.
However, the teams with top-five draft picks are there for a reason, and often, the newly drafted quarterback is set up to fail, as they don’t have the talent surrounding them in year one to succeed.
Orlovsky believes it will be best for the Patriots’ draftee to sit for a year behind a veteran to learn the ropes and then pick up the starting job in 2025.
This has proven a successful method recently demonstrated by the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers via Patrick Mahomes and Jordan Love.
