De Gea changes his stance on Premier League return after turning down clubs

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea would consider a return to the Premier League if he is approached by Newcastle in the coming weeks.

The Spaniard, 33, was expected to sign a new contract with United before announcing he would instead be leaving the club as a free agent back in July. De Gea, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford, has been linked with a host of clubs since then but is still unattached ahead of the winter transfer window.

De Gea was recently linked with a return to United, who could be without their first-choice shot-stopper, Andre Onana, for up to seven games during the Africa Cup of Nations in the New Year. But it now seems De Gea could be targeted by a domestic rival.

Newcastle have been rocked by the news that Nick Pope could miss the majority of the season after dislocating his shoulder against United at the weekend. They are now said to be weighing up a move for De Gea – and The Mail claim he would be open to such an approach.

The report outlines that De Gea has turned down several clubs over the past few months but is now ‘more receptive’ than he has been previously. Newcastle could offer him a deal for the second half of the campaign.

Intriguingly, Martin Dubravka – who spent time on loan at United last season – will deputise for Pope. But De Gea boasts significant Premier League experience and represents something of a coup for the Magpies.

De Gea has fuelled speculation that he would be open to returning to his former club in recent weeks with several cryptic social media posts. He has been back in the city visiting former teammates, too.

Rumours that De Gea could return to Old Trafford have come at a time when his successor, Onana, has struggled to win fans over after making an error-strewn start to his Manchester United career.

The former Inter Milan goalkeeper was caught out for two goals in last week’s damaging 3-3 draw against Galatasaray and has made other high-profile mistakes in games both in Europe and the Premier League.

United refreshed their goalkeeping ranks in the summer. As well as moving on De Gea, they also sold Dean Henderson and signed No.2 Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce.
