Awards season continued with a bang at the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday night – which took place just 24 hours after the Critics Choice Awards, having been delayed as a result of the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023.

Despite being scheduled so soon after another glittering awards event, the Emmys still drew in an impressive array of big-name stars, many of whom put on a very stylish display on the red carpet.

But while the writers’ and actors’ strikes have finally come to an end, it seems as though several stylists may have walked out on their clients, at least if the disastrous red carpet displays were anything to go by.

As with many other awards shows this year, there were also plenty of celebrity guests who suffered serious fashion fails, landing themselves a spot on the worst-dressed list for the evening.

One early arrival who drew attention for all the wrong reasons was Laverne Cox, who wore a revealing shimmery strapless gown, which gave the impression that she had wrapped herself in a skin-tight garbage bag for the evening.

Several guests at the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards suffered serious fashion fails, including Laverne Cox, whose revealing strapless gown looked akin to a garbage bag

Francesca Zocchi's purple sequin-and-feathered number made her look like a substitute host for a game show - or perhaps a wannabe show girl with her sights set on a Las Vegas stage

In addition to the rather tacky material, the dress also featured some bizarre flaps of fabric down either side of the skirt that resembled a fish’s gills, leaving the starlet looking akin to a creature from the depths of the ocean.

Influencer Emma Brooks took the concept of ‘revealing’ to a whole new level when she stepped out on the red carpet wearing a Grecian-style optical illusion dress that was designed to make her look as though she was completely naked.

The white design featured a skin-tight long-sleeved shirt with a black shadow pattern tracing the outline of a nude woman’s body before flowing into a toga-esque skirt that spread behind her as she made her way into the event.

Ali Wong, who can normally be relied upon to make a stylish splash on the red carpet, put a rare foot wrong on Monday night when she stepped out at the Emmys in an eyesore of a dress that could well have been a DIY crafting project gone wrong thanks to the bizarre combination of sequin bodice and garish floral print.

One guest – Francesca Zocchi – appeared on the red carpet in a sequined purple wraparound number complete with plunging neckline and voluminous feather-trimmed sleeves, with the overall effect leaving her looking like a substitute host for a trashy gameshow, or a back-up show girl with her sights set on a Las Vegas stage.

But she was not the only attendee who appeared to have confused the Emmy Awards for a cosplay convention.

The silhouette of actress Rhea Seehorn's dress was certainly flattering, but the garish green color and over-the-top beading distracted entirely from what might have been a chic design

Poor color choice seemed to be something of a theme for the evening, as proven by writer Neena Beber, whose baggy mustard-colored frock was one of the many fashion fails of the night

The pattern of actress Angela Gibbs' dress made it almost painful to look at - and when positioned in front of the wordy step-and-repeat behind her it was a real eyesore

Niecy Nash-Betts appeared to be channeling Ursula from The Little Mermaid in her figure-hugging strapless gown – which she looked as though she might spill out of at any minute.

Then there was writer Kerry O’Neill, whose crumpled black dress made her look like a poor man’s Morticia Addams courtesy of the gothic drapes of wrinkled fabric that caught the light in a very unflattering manner.

Morticia appeared to be a popular source of inspiration for the evening, with seasoned actress Marla Gibbs also making a nod towards the Addams Family’s matriarch in her velvet gown, which featured a very bizarre neckline and gothic sleeves.

Comedian Amber Ruffin’s pale pink gown featured far too much fabric and did little to flatter her figure, while the color made it look like something that had been plucked off the sale rack at David’s Bridal – leaning more towards bad bridesmaid fashion than chic red carpet style.

Writer and producer Cody Heller’s bubblegum-pink dress may well have been an homage to Barbie but the saccharine-sweet color combined with a prom-style design did little to impress – particularly when viewed with her neon pink chunky heels that left her resembling a Bratz doll.
