Manchester United scouts were reportedly in Italy over the weekend to watch AS Roma’s match against Atalanta in Serie A. However, their main focus was not on Roma manager Jose Mourinho, but rather on highly-rated defender Giorgio Scalvini. Scalvini, who made his 21st appearance of the season in the match, has been a target for United for over a year. Reports suggest that United’s interest in the 20-year-old centre-back is advanced, and they are ready to activate his £44 million release clause. Scalvini is also being courted by other top clubs in Europe, including AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Chelsea. He has already established himself as an important player for Atalanta and has also earned seven senior international caps for Italy. With the contracts of Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans expiring in June, and Victor Lindelof’s future uncertain, United is expected to prioritize a new centre-back in their upcoming summer transfer window.
