The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has done so Russia convicted of human rights violations in Crimea following the annexation of the Black Sea Peninsula. The judges in Strasbourg decided this and thus declared a lawsuit by Ukraine well-founded. Russia does not recognize the Court’s rulings.

“The incidents were so numerous and interconnected as to constitute systematic violations,” the judges said in explaining their decision. The Ukrainian government’s lawsuit included “illegal arrests,” “suppression of non-Russian media” and “expropriations without compensation.”
