Patrice Evra has demanded Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial be benched again after being left out vs Chelsea.

The Manchester United attacking pair were surprisingly named among the substitutes for Wednesday’s win over the Blues. In their absence, the Red Devils put together a sensational performance as they created a number of presentable opportunities against Chelsea.

Rashford was eventually introduced in place of Rasmus Hojlund late on. Martial was not afforded a minute of time on the pitch.

Speaking after the game, former Man United defender Evra claimed that both should remain out of the starting line-up. Speaking on Amazon Prime Video, the Frenchman said: “He [Ten Hag] put the right players on the pitch and United fans won’t understand if that same team doesn’t play the next game.

“I will understand if it’s an injury, but I think it will be tough for Marcus and Martial to come back in the starting XI. Garnacho had an amazing game, Antony had an amazing game and the work ethic, you can have nothing negative to say about those players.

“So I hope this team will stay [as it is] and it’s going to be tough for Marcus and Martial and they will have to fight to get their places back because the kids played very well today.”

Evra was involved in an awkward exchange with United boss Ten Hag during the post-match analysis of the win against Chelsea. After the Dutchman claimed that the Red Devils’ hectic schedule contributed to their poor performance against Newcastle, he wasn’t left convinced.

Evra replied: “I know you’re protecting your players but we really feel again Newcastle – Newcastle are also playing in the Champions League against PSG.

“So I think saying they were a little bit tired is not an excuse and tonight and I’m sorry and I know you won’t comment about it but the players that were on the pitch all of them were like dying for the badge. They were playing as a team.

“I think the start today was a team. It wasn’t one player even McTominay wins man-of-the-match. But I just saw the starting XI, they were the players and were like determined to win and forgive what happened against Newcastle.”

Amid the Frenchman’s calls over the United side for this weekend’s clash against Bournemouth, Luke Shaw has also offered his view. Keen-eyed fans noticed that the defender had liked a tweet containing Evra’s suggestions to keep Rashford and Martial benched.

Shaw has since responded and also unliked the post. He wrote: “Come on don’t be silly, obviously not intentional.”
