Real estate tax is a mandatory levy. If this is not paid, fines will follow. It doesn’t matter if you missed the deadline or don’t have enough money to pay the amount. After the term has expired, the tax authorities may charge a late payment surcharge of at least 25 euros per month. However, this is not a must and many states do without it. In most states, as a defaulter you will only receive a reminder letter.

For every month that you have not paid property tax, one percent is added to the property tax amount. The late payment surcharge and the property tax due must be paid within two weeks. If this does not happen, the Tax Authorities can impose a penalty. Here you should expect to pay several hundred euros. Maximum possible the tax office Ask 25,000 euros.

If you also miss this deadline, an estimate will be made. Tax officials estimate the living space based on information about the home.
