The Boston Red Sox will be without infielder Trevor Story for the remainder of the season.

He will undergo season-ending left shoulder surgery after fracturing his shoulder on a defensive play this past weekend.

Since his recovery time will be six months, it will take a miracle for him to be ready to play in the postseason should the Red Sox qualify.

Story was off to a slow start at the plate, hitting .226/.294/.323 with a .617 OPS.

However, the Red Sox know about his vast potential.

The Red Sox will now be forced to platoon at both shortstop and second base with Vaughn Grissom, David Hamilton, Pablo Reyes, and Romy Gonzalez all seeing time in the middle infield.

For now, uber-prospect Ceddanne Rafaela will remain in the outfield.

Fans expressed their feelings about Story’s unfortunate injury on Twitter.

Those in attendance noted that the injury felt particularly painful from the stands.

Story has a career .834 OPS and was a 35-homer, 25-steals threat in his prime.

While he is still theoretically in his prime at 31, it’s clear he isn’t the player he used to be.

Injuries have gotten in his way ever since he signed that six-year, $140 million deal with Boston two offseasons ago.

In 145 games with the Sox, Story has an 86 OPS+, or 14 percent below the league-average offensive player.

His OPS+ with the Colorado Rockies was 112: 12 percent better than his peers.

Hopefully Story makes a complete recovery, most likely with 2025 in mind.

The Red Sox are counting on him to resemble the player he was in the Rocky Mountains.
