Federal budget: Lindner criticizes ‘excessive’ spending requests of some ministries

The traffic light government of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP is headed for further confrontation in the 2025 budget negotiations. Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) criticized the spending wishes of five ministries without naming them exactly. There are “individual departments that have submitted outrageous wish lists – Christmas, Easter and birthdays together, so to speak. This is not acceptable,” he said in Berlin.

Linder specifically referred to ministries that used money abroad. “In any case, our financial strength is not sufficient to fully process the wishes of individual departments for overseas commitments,” the minister said. The majority of ministries have adhered to the medium-term guidelines, which is very positive, he added.

Individual ministries were due to submit their 2025 spending plans to the Federal Ministry of Finance last week.
