The Italian football Federation – FIGC have made their stance clear against the Super League, disregarding the idea.

Some Serie A clubs – specifically Roma, Inter and Atalanta have released statements claiming that they are not in favour of the idea of the Super League. A22 have already released a new format of the model, which is expected to be more open and favourable to a higher number of clubs in comparison to the 2021 format.

FIGC have now released a statement about the Super League, stating the idea is not compatible with their vision about the game.

A statement says (via La Gazzetta dello Sport): “Following the ruling of the Court of the European Union on the so-called Super League case, the Italian Football Federation, fully recognizing itself in the superordinate bodies of UEFA and FIFA, reiterates its convinced action to protect the national championships, for the defense of the broader and more general principle of sporting merit and respect for international calendars”

The statement further states: “For these reasons, in compliance with national laws and international regulations, the FIGC believes that the Super League is not a project compatible with these conditions and will always act, in all venues, pursuing the general interests of Italian football.”

In the previous edition of the Super League, Italian clubs had initially agreed to join the new structure and Juventus’ former president Andrea Agnelli was in the forefront of the experiment. But he isn’t at the club anymore and the FIGC statement could well speak for the clubs.
