Today, Google Photos is getting improvements to search, allowing you to use more descriptive queries using everyday language. One example Google gave is something like “Emma painting in the backyard,” and you can see how it works in the video below.
You can sort results by date or relevance to help you get to the specific image you’re looking for even faster. This experience is currently rolling out in English to all Android and iOS users, and will expand to more languages “in the coming weeks.”
Select US users are also getting early access to Ask Photos through Google Labs today, as long as they are signed up. the waiting list. This powers search with the power of Gemini AI. Ask Photos understands the context of your photo gallery—the most important people in your life, your hobbies, your favorite foods, that sort of thing.
This allows it to extract relevant details to help you find specific memories and learn information about your life. The video below shows how this works using “What did we eat at the hotel in Stanley?” as the question.
Since Ask Photos is basically a chatbot on Google Photos, it’s conversational, so if it doesn’t find what you’re looking for on the first try, you can give it hints or extra details.
You can also ask for help summarizing the main things you did on a trip, and give suggestions for the best photos from a specific event. It all works through the magic of Gemini templates.
Google says humans may review your Ask Photos queries to improve the service, but only after you’ve signed out of your Google Account to protect your privacy. The answers Ask Photos provides to you are not reviewed by humans unless you provide feedback or in rare cases to address abuse or harm.
