Emily Blunt and John Krasinski’s marriage is under the microscope after they dropped a divorce bombshell on the Golden Globes red carpet.

Social media sleuths have posted wild theories under a now-viral TikTok video, shared by CBS, asking if John made an innocuous remark about the weather or if the actor was joking about marital trouble.

One TikTok user commented: ‘Did he say I can’t wait to divorce? And she said hey and he stated I’m serious.’

The shock surrounding the ten second clip, which has already garnered over two million views, proves the adoration for the pairing, which has so far avoided the usual Hollywood pitfalls.

Instead the couple are more likely to be in the headlines for their ‘relationship goal’ status. MailOnline takes a look at their movie-style love story.

 A ‘romantic comedy’ meeting

The couple have been together since 2008, with Emily remarking that she ‘knew right away’ that she had a connection with John.

Calling their first meeting ‘our romantic comedy,’ Emily explained during a 2018 appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers how she was introduced to her future husband when they were both dining in the same restaurant.

John was with friend Justin Theroux but Emily has recalled how he ‘abandoned Justin and came over to us. He just stood there and made me laugh. I kind of [knew right away.]’

For his part, John has admitted he was ‘full stalker status’ after admiring Emily from afar thanks to her movie-stealing work in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada, admitting that he later told his wife that he watched the movie ’75 times’.

‘It was one of those things where I wasn’t really looking for a relationship and I was thinking I’m going to take my time in LA,’ he recounted on The Ellen Show. ‘Then I met her and I was so nervous. I was like, ‘Oh god, I think I’m going to fall in love with her.’ As I shook her hand I went, ‘I like you.”

Becoming each other’s biggest fans

John has kept up his superfan status throughout the couple’s 15 years together, even admitting he ‘immediately wept’ the first time he heard his wife sing in her hit movie Into The Woods.

‘It was really wild. It was like finding out that your wife can levitate,’ he gushed.

‘The air changes in the room when she starts doing what she does,’ he once told Vanity Fair. ‘It’s so honest and so pure and so powerful. It’s like a superpower that she can just unlock.’

Unlike many privacy-seeking Hollywood couples, the pair speak openly about their love for one another in interviews, with Emily also regularly showering John with praise.

‘Meeting John really changed my life,’ she has said. ‘When I feel the support that I have from him, I feel invincible. There’s someone behind you on your good days and someone in front of you on your bad days.’

After less that a year of low key pizza dates at John’s LA home, the couple were engaged in August 2009, and another 11 months after that they married at George Clooney’s estate in Lake Como, Italy.

Emily has said she has just one regret from their idyllic wedding – getting ‘a bad spray tan’.

They welcomed their first daughter, Hazel Grace in February 2014 before their second daughter Violet was born in June 2016.

Working together

In 2017 the pair announced they were collaborating together for the first time, on horror film A Quiet Place.

John shared the news on Instagram, writing: ‘Question: ‘John, who’s the one actor you’ve been wanting to work with?’ Answer: (see above),’ alongside an image of the couple.

John starred opposite his wife in the movie, as well as directing and writing and upon its release in 2018 the thriller was a huge box office and critical success.

Speaking to Men’s Health about the pivotal time in their shared life, John revealed that ‘I said to Emily, ‘There’s no greater gift that the universe could have given me than to go through the biggest success of my career and I don’t have to explain to you how it felt”.

Putting family first

Despite appearing in numerous projects in 2023, Emily recently revealed that she made the decision to step away from the camera this year to focus on motherhood.

Emily explained on the Table For Two With Bruce Bozzi podcast: ‘This year, I’m not working. I worked quite a bit last year and my oldest baby is 9, so we’re in the last year of single digits.’

‘And I just feel [like] there are cornerstones to their day that are so important when they’re little. And it’s, ‘Will you wake me up? Will you take me to school? Will you pick me up? Will you put me to bed?”

‘And I just need to be there for all of them for a good stretch. And I just felt that in my bones,’ the actress added.

A tight (and very starry) friendship circle

Away from the red carpets the couple split their time between a home in London, and their $15.3million apartment in Brooklyn, New York, revealing that they have actively avoided bringing up their kids in the Hollywood bubble.

Despite their impressive real estate portfolio and A-lister status, the down to earth couple prioritise a low-key life offscreen, choosing to spend their down time with family and long-time friends – who just happen to be be fellow celebs.

The couple have also remained great friends with many of their co-stars, inviting the likes of Meryl Streep, George Clooney and Matt Damon guests to their wedding.

Indeed, Emily is well versed in dealing with John superfans, admitting she is bombarded with heckles that her husband should be with his onscreen wife Jenna Fischer, from his hit show The Office.

‘Whenever I walk beside him, people still shout out, ‘I wish you were with Pam,’ Emily shared during an episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast. ‘They ask, ‘Where’s Pam?’ and I’m like, ‘She’s not here.’

John summed up the secret to their marriage in an interview with Playboy, revealing that separating themselves from the fame echo chamber has helped their relationship to endure.

‘We have got to have a very removed existence, because we just looked at it as though we were two people who had fallen in love, rather than two Hollywood celebrities who’d met each other,’ said the actor.
