On Saturday night, England will return to football action for the first time since their defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin in July.
England’s second successive European Championship final defeat spelled the end of Gareth Southgate’s tenure in charge of the Three Lions after almost eight years in charge, during which time he led his nation to two European Championship finals, a World Cup semi-final and a World Cup quarter-final.
The manager has taken over on an interim basis as Southgate’s successor while the FA look to recruit a permanent replacement in Lee Carsley, who has been promoted from the Under-21s, with whom he was crowned European champions at the 2023 Under-21 European Championship.
Carsley’s first match in charge will be against the side he represented on 36 occasions when England travel to Dublin to face Ireland in the opening match of the new Nations League season.
England suffered a shock relegation from the last edition of the Nations League, finishing bottom of a group that included Italy, Hungary and Germany, which leaves them now playing in League B.
After playing in Dublin, England will return to Wembley for their next match on Tuesday when they host Finland.
Saturday night will also mark the start of a new era for Ireland as Icelandic coach Heimir Hallgrimsson takes charge of the national team for the first time, having previously been in charge of Jamaica for the past two seasons.
The 57-year-old has fond memories of coaching Iceland against England, having been the man responsible for Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions’ second-round exit from Euro 2016 in Nice.
Hallgrimsson takes over a team previously managed by Stephen Kenny, who led the team for three and a half years without success, failing to qualify for a major tournament, losing six of Ireland’s eight Euro 2024 qualifiers and only managing to pick up points against a Gibraltar side full of part-time players.
The 47-year-old will begin his tenure as manager with back-to-back home games, first on Saturday against England, during which a hostile and noisy atmosphere can be expected, and followed by the visit of Greece to Dublin on Tuesday night.
Saturday’s match will be the first meeting between the two nations since a friendly at Wembley in November 2021, when goals from Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin secured a 3-0 win for Gareth Southgate’s side behind closed doors.
Five of the last six meetings between the two nations have ended in draws, including the most recent meeting in Dublin in June 2015, while England’s victory at Wembley three years ago was their only win over Ireland in six attempts, dating back to 39 years ago in 1985.
