As the Jacksonville Jaguars attempt to free up some additional cap space before the NFL’s free agency negotiating window begins on Monday, some wondered if the team might move on from All-Pro offensive guard Brandon Scherff.
Scherff signed a three-year contract with the Jaguars during the 2022 offseason worth $49.5 million, and according to Spotrac.com, if the team were to cut him before June 1 of this year, they would have cleared a little more than $9 million in cap space.
However, Jacksonville and the veteran offensive lineman were reportedly able to agree to a contract renegotiation on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
More Jaguars moves: Jacksonville and Brandon Scherff reached agreement on a deal that will fully guarantee the All-Pro guard’s salary this season, add three voidable years to his contract, and save the Jaguars roughly $5 million against the salary cap this season, per sources. pic.twitter.com/PsMIcUFdT5

According to Schefter, Scherff’s entire salary for the 2024 season is now fully guaranteed, and three voidable years have been added to the end of his contract.
The ESPN insider also revealed that the contract renegotiation with the veteran blocker will save the Jaguars about $5 million in cap space this offseason.
Based on the current salary cap numbers recorded by OverTheCap.com, Scherff’s renegotiated contract should increase the Jaguars’ current cap space to a little more than $23 million.
Keeping one of the best interior offensive linemen in the NFL on their roster was clearly important for Jacksonville this year.
Scherff’s play has dipped a bit in the last two seasons compared to how he performed in the previous seven years as a member of the Washington Commanders.
Still, in 2023, he finished with the 20th-best offensive grade from PFF among 79 qualifying guards around the league.
It seems safe to say Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was happy to find out that the team’s top interior blocker will be returning for another season.
