England star Jude Bellingham thought he had sealed a dramatic three points for Real Madrid against Valencia but the referee blew his whistle for full-time just seconds before the ball hit the back of the net. He leapt highest to meet Brahim Diaz’s cross but was forced to cut his celebrations short after realising that the official had ended the game while the cross was in the air.

Bellingham, furious at the decision to call for full-time at a crucial point in the game when Madrid were launching another attack, protested towards the referee and was shown a red card. He confronted ref Jesus Gil Manzano as the official attempted to leave the Mestalla pitch and a number of his Los Blancos team-mates huddled around the pair in disbelief.

Luka Modric’s late corner was cleared to the edge of the Valencia box, where it was met by Diaz who dribbled towards the wing and the referee signalled the end of the game. But as the whistle was being blown the former Manchester City man lifted the ball into the box and Bellingham steered a header past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The whistle had gone before the ball had reached Bellingham, but he was irate with the official for stopping the game while Real Madrid were attacking. There had been seven minutes of stoppage time signalled due to a freak injury suffered by Valencia’s Mouctar Diakhaby, which had already been played before Bellingham thought he had scored a last-gasp winner.

The 20-year-old was given his marching orders as Manzano’s report stated that Bellingham “ran towards him in an aggressive manner”, before shouting, in English: “That’s a f***ing goal.”

Former Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger was also sent off and the pair face a La Liga ban, while midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni took to social media in the aftermath and wrote: “That’s embarrassing.”

Madrid had the opportunity to go nine points clear at the top of the table but started disastrously in Valencia when the hosts took the lead in the 27th minute through Hugo Duro, before Roman Yaremchuk doubled their advantage minutes later.

Vinicius Jr pulled a goal back for Madrid just before half-time and then equalised in the 76th minute, before accidentally colliding with Diakhaby to cause a considerable amount of stoppage time as the centre-back laid on the floor in agony before being stretchered off the pitch.

However, the visitors needed just a few more seconds to complete their comeback, a plea denied by the official as he blew the final whistle when Diaz was crossing the ball for Bellingham to continue his goalscoring exploits in Spain, only to be denied by the referee.
