The owners of Liverpool and Man United will want to join the Super League plans but will not risk another ‘hostile reaction’ from fans.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the chances of English teams participating in the Super League when it launches next year.
As reported by AS, the Super League has intensified talks with European clubs and plans to launch in September 2025.
The report adds that they plan to begin the tournament with the “best teams in Europe and also with English clubs.”
The ‘Big Six’ have all reiterated their intention to not take part in the revived plans after dropping out of the initial proposal in 2021.
Maguire believes the owners of the ‘sneaky six’ will want to be involved and could even create a ‘whisper campaign’ to join later down the line if it proves to be a success for Real Madrid and Barcelona.
“There’s no doubt that the owners of Liverpool, Man United and the other sneaky six would love to be in the Super League, but I think they all know from the very hostile reaction of fans that this would not be an acceptable decision,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“I think what we will see is perhaps a Super League which doesn’t involve English clubs to begin with.
“If this has a significant detrimental impact on the value of Uefa’s rights then we will start to see a whisper campaign that clubs cannot afford to not be involved because Real Madrid and Barcelona are.
“It’ll be interesting to see who is going to sign up because I would imagine there’d be a very hostile reaction from German football fans.
“English football fans have clearly voted with their voices and their feet when the first variant of the Super League emerged.“
