A Labour MP was brutally ripped apart by an angry voter this morning as the pensioner mauled him for his vote in favour of cutting millions from Winter Fuel Payments.
Jeevun Sandher was appearing in BBC 5Live’s political talk show when he was hit with an angry tirade and was sheepishly forced to admit he had supported the welfare cuts in yesterday’s Commons vote.
Margaret demanded an explanation as to why MPs voted for the cut when they were able to claim the energy costs of their second properties as expenses.
The attack occurred hours after it was revealed that Rachel Reeves herself was announced the taxpayer has owed more than £4,000 in energy bills over the last five years.
Margaret exploded: “You want to look after the elderly, you just declared that, you want to look after people in this country – but you’re not doing it, are you? You’re not doing it!”
“That’s what makes me very angry, each of you who is a deputy can claim expenses, you can claim your heating!
“Okay, we can all reduce our heating, we can reduce our electricity, but think about it: electricity is going to go up by 10% and gas is going to go up by about 14%.”
Responding to Mr Sandher’s claim that Labour wants to look after the British people, Margaret then demanded to know why the government is targeting the living standards of the elderly while sending billions abroad in foreign aid.
“Why are we giving away so much money? Why are we spending millions every week on hotels?
“Why are we sending money to China? Why are we sending money to India? We have all this, but you still want to take care of the people of this country? Well, somehow I don’t think that’s true!”
Refusing to breathe, the furious caller then fired Keir Starmeraccusing the Prime Minister of lying during the general election.
Although Labour’s manifesto made no mention of Winter Fuel payments, when this omission was spotted by journalists during the campaign, Labour sources insisted the policies would continue and there were no plans to change eligibility for the benefits.
Margaret was furious: “As for Keir Starmerhe lied in his manifesto, and so to me that is misleading. He was misleading then, so he will be misleading in government.”
Mr Sandher insisted Labour was helping Britain’s poorest pensioners by doubling pension credit enrolment and maintaining the family support fund.
He argued that around 40% of pensioners will be entitled to an extra payment this year to help with their heating bills.
However, there are wider concerns about the uptake of pension credit, even with the extra resources the government is investing to encourage sign-ups.
The Loughborough MP said: “I am proud of this government and have absolute faith in Keir and Rachel.”
“I couldn’t be more excited to see what we’ll achieve in the coming months and years.”
Margaret replied simply, “God help us.”
