Manchester United fans have praised Harry Maguire in the wake of the defender’s honest assessment of Saturday night’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle.
The former United captain, 30, was one of the few travelling players to leave St James’ Park with any credit as Newcastle cantered to victory. Anthony Gordon plundered the game’s only goal but Eddie Howe’s side were vastly superior to their opponents in every department and should have won by a bigger margin.
United have now lost 10 matches already this season and questions continue to be asked of Erik ten Hag. He pulled no punches with his assessment after the match and neither did Maguire, who was on post-match media duties for the Red Devils.
“The boys are disappointed,” he told MUTV. “I don’t think we played to our level and it’s been a tough week. Three away games, six days, but we don’t use that as an excuse. We didn’t play well enough, especially in the first half.

Erik ten Hag explains bust-up with Anthony Martial in fresh Man Utd crisis
“We grew into the game in the second and maybe could have got a point in the end. We put a lot of pressure on them in the last 10 or 15 minutes, but it wasn’t enough and I think in the end you have to say they deserved it.”
Maguire seemed destined to leave Old Trafford in the summer after falling out of favour during the 2022/23 campaign and was the subject of transfer interest from West Ham in the summer. But even after losing the club captaincy, Maguire chose to stay and fight for his place – and it now seems as though he’s won over both Ten Hag and the Manchester United fans.
A whole host of people commented on an Instagram video of Maguire’s post-match comments with the vast majority of them complimentary. One fan said: “Maguire has been massive. Respect to him. Ready to fight for the shirt,” while another posted: “He can hold his head high, top performance.”.

After starting the season on the fringes, Maguire has now started United’s last seven Premier League matches after leapfrogging Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof in the Old Trafford pecking order.
Speaking last month, Ten Hag made it clear that Maguire was now a key part of his plans after praising the defender following a disappointing 4-3 defeat against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.
After talking about different defensive combinations and the competition for places at the back, Ten Hag said: “Harry Maguire is doing very well in this moment. As I always said with Harry, he can do the job and now he’s showing it.”
