Manchester United’s season isn’t going to plan.

Erik ten Hag’s side were knocked out of Europe earlier this month after finishing bottom of their Champions League group and failed to defend the Carabao Cup. Their also seventh in the Premier League table, 11 points behind leaders and bitter rivals Liverpool.

Yet United’s Boxing Day win against Aston Villa – plus the imminent arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe – has boosted their sprits. Ratcliffe has agreed to buy a 25 per cent stake in the club and will take charge of football operations if and when he passes the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test. Here are the latest transfer headlines from Old Trafford…

Greenwood going nowhere

According to GOAL, there isn’t a break clause in Mason Greenwood’s season-long agreement with Getafe. Greenwood, 22, is rebuilding his career in Spain after being told he won’t play for United following an internal investigation. He’s showed glimpses of his potential at Getafe by scoring five goals and providing four assists this season.

Getafe are interested in signing Greenwood, who has 18 months left on his Old Trafford contract, on a permanent deal. Yet Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid – Spain’s three biggest clubs – are also thought to be keen on the England international.

Getafe will receive 20 per cent of any future sale as part of Greenwood’s temporary move. It’s unclear how much United will demand for the striker, with Getafe willing to offer around £40million. Yet that 20 per cent clause may push United’s asking price up.
