MSI X870E motherboards will feature CUDIMM memory support on AMD Ryzen 9000 & 8000 CPUs but will be limited in terms of functionality.
MSI X870E Motherboard Will Debut With CUDIMM Memory Support, But Functionality Will Be Limited At First
The DDR5 CUDIMM memory standard is seeing increasing adoption by manufacturers, primarily due to its benefits, especially in improving memory transfer capabilities.
CUDIMM, or the Dual In-Line Memory Module Without Clock Buffer standard, uses CKD (Clock Driver) to regenerate the clock signal to improve stability and help the RAM module reach higher frequencies. This, in turn, allows dynamic adjustment of voltage and clock frequency. Companies like Biwin, V-ColorAnd Asgard have launched their respective CUDIMM solutions, which achieve speeds of up to 9,600 MT/s.
Considering CUDIMMs have seen increased support recently, enthusiasts questioned the fact whether AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series CPUs will support CUDIMM modules, and now, MSI reps & in-house overclockers TOPPC has verified that the X870E platform will indeed debut with CUDIMM compatibility, but it is expected to be exclusive to Ryzen 9000 and Ryzen 8000 series CPUs, with Ryzen 7000 not supported due to compatibility issues.
In an update posted on YouTube, TOPPC claims that MSI will make adjustments to the onboard memory slots to accommodate CUDIMMs, along with the emerging CAMM 2 standard, but experts have noted the fact that the motherboard will not initially debut to support “such outrageous speeds 10,000 MT/s, and they probably boot at a lower frequency due to naive compatibility, so it wouldn’t be wrong to say that consumers won’t benefit from the fast speeds of CUDIMMs early on, but later on when the standard becomes commonplace in the industry.
Interestingly, Intel’s upcoming Arrow Lake-S processor is also ready Feature support for CUDIMM via onboard “GEAR 2” configurationwhich allows the memory to operate at twice the memory clock speed of the processor.
And now, it’s safe to say that AMD Zen 5 CPUs will also feature CUDIMM support, which will finally level the playing field among competitors. For now, only MSI has verified CUDIMM compatibility with the X870, so we’re not sure if this is a manufacturer exclusive or other vendors will follow MSI.
