People intrigued about the true story behind Society of the Snow wish to know if Numa died in the movie, or whether he is still alive. So, here’s all the necessary information about it.

Does Numa die in Society of the Snow?

Yes, Numa Turcatti died in Society of the Snow.

With Numa being the narrator and one of the leads in the retelling of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 flight’s crashing, many viewers who didn’t know the real story were surprised to see his demise. A good chunk of the film was told from his point of view. So it came as a shock to many that he didn’t make it at the end.

After the flight crashed in the Andes Mountains on October 13, 1972, Numa died on December 11, 1972.  He turned 25 on October 30 and was the last one to die before everyone was rescued on December 22, 1972. He died with a note in his hand, which read:

“There is no greater love than to give one’s life for friends.”
(Translated from Spanish to English)

Numa’s death played a crucial role in everyone else’s rescue.

What happens to Numa in Society of the Snow?

While Numa died in his sleep, the cause of his death was a cut on his foot that got infected over time.

Numa made great efforts to keep every one of the crash survivors alive. He motivated others, volunteered to lead a rescue mission, and resisted until the very end to eat others as the crash victims had to resort to eating bodies to survive.

During their time in the mountains, the crash victims were hit by a deadly storm, which buried them and their plane under the snow. But when they escaped, Numa found a cut on his foot. It soon got infected and slowly rendered him immobile. A few days after his injury, the infection grew and ultimately killed him in his sleep. But before that, he gave Nando and the others permission to use his body for food.

The dying words in his letter motivated Nando, Roberto, and Tintin to lead an expedition. It led to the rescue of all 16 survivors of Air Force Flight 571.
