Despite repeated calls, fighting continues in parts of the city, Sudan’s humanitarian coordinator, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, said on Saturday. Heavy weapons are used in the densely populated parts of Al-Fashir. Wounded civilians were taken to hospitals and others tried to flee the combat zone. Nkweta-Salami said she was “deeply disturbed” and “disturbed” by reports of the fighting. This puts a total of 800,000 people at risk.
For more than a year, Sudan has been rocked by heavy fighting between the forces of military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF militia of his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. According to the UN, tens of thousands of people have been killed so far and about 8.5 million people have been displaced. Aid agencies have repeatedly warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis.
In the states of the Sudanese region of Darfur, the total area of which is approx France matches – the RSF has taken four of the five capitals under its control. Al-Fashir is the only capital that the RSF has not occupied so far.
