Sunderland riot LIVE: Police station in flames, eight arrested and three officers in hospital

Merseyside Police have confirmed that a dispersal order has been put in place until 6pm on Sunday evening, to help tackle anti-social behaviour which may have contributed to Tuesday’s violent riots.

Under the order, which gives police more powers to tackle ASB, officers will be able to counsel people who are engaging in anti-social behaviour or are likely to become involved in such incidents.

However, most importantly, these powers will not be used by anyone who is visiting the area and going about their daily business.

Under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour and Policing Act 2014, police officers have the power to seize any item used in the commission of anti-social behaviour.

If a person who has already been instructed to leave the area returns, an offence will be committed for which he or she may be arrested.

Sefton Community Policing Inspector Graham Fisher said: “We have introduced this order in response to the disorder that occurred earlier this week, which has had a major impact on residents and businesses in Southport. “We have increased patrols in the area to deal with any issues, and this dispersal zone gives officers extra powers to approach people they suspect may be there to commit anti-social behaviour or other crimes. “This order is to ensure that residents and businesses are not subjected to such behaviour, and I would urge people to continue to report any concerns and we will take action. “I would urge parents and carers to be aware of where young people in their care are, to further help us deal with those causing problems.

“If you witness any anti-social behaviour or have any information about such incidents, please get in touch or speak to our officers and we will take action.”
