SAN FRANCISCO — Tesla Inc. has stopped taking orders for the cheapest version of its Cybertruck, which costs $61,000, but is making the $100,000 version available for immediate orders and delivery later this month, its website shows.
Demand and supply of the Cybertruck are closely monitored by Tesla Inc. investors and fans because CEO Elon Musk has poured resources into developing the truck and plans to build 200,000 a year.
In October, Musk said Tesla had 1 million reservations for the pickup truck. Some customers have indicated they are waiting for cheaper versions because the prices are higher and the range is lower than originally anticipated.
“This shows that demand is much lower than a million trucks,” Guidehouse Insights analyst Sam Abuelsamid told Reuters.
The Cybertruck sold nearly 4,800 units in July — its best month yet, making it by far the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. priced above $100,000, according to Cox Automotive.
“They have sold over 16,000 so far, but maintaining high volume at this price point will be a challenge,” a Cox spokesperson said in an email.
Deliveries of the Cybertruck — which has an unconventional trapezoidal exterior design inspired by the movie “Blade Runner” and a stainless steel body — began in November 2023 after years of delays and a difficult production ramp-up. Musk estimated in 2019 that the truck would cost $40,000 and be able to travel 500 miles or more on a single charge.
Tesla’s website no longer offers the option to reserve a $61,000 version of the Cybertruck, which was previously offered with a 250-mile range and scheduled for delivery in 2025.
The $99,990 limited-edition dual-motor Foundation variant with a 318-mile range is scheduled for delivery early this month, while the $119,990 triple-motor Foundation Cyberbeast with a 301-mile range will be available starting in October.
“They have a large inventory of two- and three-engine trucks right now,” Abuelsamid said.
