This comes after a 15-year-old was allegedly raped and kidnapped on Christmas Day until 27 December at Tshidzini village in Tshaulu.

The police said that according to the teenager’s mother, she had gone to visit a relative in the same village last week on Saturday, 23 December 2023.

However, on Monday, the mother was contacted and told that her daughter left home intending to play with other children, but she never returned and couldn’t be located.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the 15-year-old was not reported missing to the police until the girl’s mom was contacted on Wednesday at about 7pm.

“The mother was told that her daughter was found by a passer-by in an abandoned room in the same village. It is suspected that three unknown males were earlier seen coming out of the same room,” Mashaba said.

Girl allegedly taken to an abandoned house by three unknown men

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the girl was walking home when she was forcefully dragged by three unknown male suspects, who took her to the abandoned house.

After the incident, the trio left her at the house.

Mashaba added that the girl was raped by one of the suspects on Monday and Tuesday.

“The safety of women and children has reached a critical point. It is against this background that all resources in the Tshaulu policing precinct have been mobilised to apprehend the suspects,” said the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.

“We must deal with pervasive patriarchal norms that promote the use of violence as an acceptable social practice. It cannot be right that women and children are continuously subjected to inhumane acts. This has to stop.”

A manhunt has since been launched to apprehend the alleged kidnappers and rapists, and investigations are continuing.

Woman arrested for raping teenager

On Sunday, in the North West, a 38-year-old woman was arrested for the rape of a 15-year-old girl at Oudedorp outside Potchefstroom.

North West police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani said the woman was arrested after she forcefully pushed a bottle into the girl’s private parts.

“It is alleged that the suspect and the victim had a quarrel about alcohol, and a fight ensued. Subsequent to the incident, the victim was badly injured and admitted to a local hospital,” Funani said.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, said he was shocked by the incident and instructed the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit to oppose bail and ensure that justice is served.

]]> Eurostar cancels trains due to flooded UK tunnels https://www.citizen.co.za/news/news-world/eurostar-cancels-trains-due-to-flooded-uk-tunnels/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 20:00:00 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523857 At least 14 Eurostar trains were cancelled on Saturday after flooding in tunnels in southern England, stranding thousands of passengers just ahead of New Year’s Eve.

The tunnels near Ebbsfleet International station in Kent were inundated as the Met Office issued weather warnings for rain, snow and ice across large parts of the country.

Eurostar, which runs services from London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam via Ashford, midway between London and the southern English coast, apologised to customers for the disruption.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Southeastern Railway said: “No highspeed trains are expected to run today between St Pancras and Ashford International.

“We are working to fix the flooding in the tunnels.”

In a statement, Southeastern added that “flooding between Ebbsfleet International and London St Pancras International means that all lines are blocked.

“Disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

It said flooding had affected both railway tunnels near Ebbsfleet, meaning both tunnels are closed.

“This means no trains can run between London St Pancras International and Ebbsfleet International,” Southeastern added.

The disruption comes after French unions ended a wildcat strike that had stranded holidaymakers and held up freight just days before Christmas.

The surprise walkout by workers that blocked the tunnel sparked hours of chaos at rail hubs in Paris and London.

Eurostar train services resumed on December 22 after an agreement was reached.

Eurotunnel unions said negotiations had yielded “results that satisfy us”.

Eurostar is owned 55.75 percent by French state-owned SNCF Voyageurs.

It almost went bankrupt during the Covid-19 pandemic but was saved with a 290-million-euro ($320.6 million) bailout from shareholders including the French government.

]]> Stormers come out on top with a point win over the Sharks https://www.citizen.co.za/sport/rugby/stormers-come-out-on-top-with-a-point-win-over-the-sharks/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 19:26:27 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523925 The Stormers maintained their stronghold over South African teams in the United Rugby Championship with a pragmatic 16-15 win over the Sharks on Saturday night at the Cape Town Stadium.

The Western Cape side last tasted defeat against their local foes in 2021, John Dobson’s team always comes alive in local derbies, especially in front of their fans, who packed the Green Point Stadium.

Their latest win over the Sharks took them to sixth place on the URC table with 26 points.

Meanwhile, John Plumtree’s woes at the Sharks continue, their chances of making the playoffs are looking slim as they have now lost seven matches this term.

Eben-less Sharks

The Sharks were dealt an early blow before the match when Eben Etzebeth pulled out of the starting line-up, and Corne Rahl replaced him. The Springbok international joined the coaching staff in the coach’s box.

The visitors from Durban didn’t struggle to settle into the game without their big enforcer, instead, they dominated possession in the opening 10 minutes, being competitive in the collisions.

After that period, the Stormers went on an attacking onslaught but the Sharks’ defence was resolute. However, it folded when the Stormers recycled the ball among the forwards and backs, that phase was finished off by lock Adre Smith with a converted try after 15 minutes.

The Stormers had the ascendency, winning penalties and going for the corner. Their lineouts were good, with centurion Scarra Ntubeni nailing his throws.

The away side tried to get back in the game but lacked composure when they had momentum, allowing the Stormers to get out of pressure moments.

Powerful Sti Sithole

The game became an arm wrestle and the scrum battle took over. The Stormers had the upper hand in that aspect, loosehead Sti Sithole was dominant as they won a scrum penalty in a kickable position. Manie Libbok converted the kick.

Close to halftime, Sharks winger Werner Kok made an unconverted score in the corner after the ball found him on the wing after it moved through flyhalf Curwin Bosch and fullback Aphelele Fassi. This meant the Stormer went the break leading 10-5.

The second stanza started with the Stormers on the front foot, putting pressure on the breakdowns. Their work-rate resulted in them winning two penalties, and Libbok slotted in one to extend his side’s advantage to eight points.

The Stormers maintained their dominance in the scrum, their scrummaging got the crowd pumped up.

The Sharks kept themselves in the game with a penalty from Bosch, which gave them much-needed confidence. The Durban side had been more neat with the ball and changed their attack variations.

They took the lead in the 58th minute when Rahl went over the white line for a converted try. The Stormers immediately hit back with another Libbok penalty. The score was 16-15 to the Stormers after the hour mark.

Tension in the air

The two teams battled for territorial dominance but whenever they made progress a handling error would set them back. The Stormers were asking questions and forcing the Sharks to make errors and get penalties.

They continuously went for the corner as they were searching for a try from the maul. They thought they had it when Andre-Hugo Venter powered over the white line but it was ruled out after they were adjudged for double banking.

With the game on the line, the tension increased slightly in the final five minutes. Both teams gave it their best but the Stormers were in control thanks to their scrum dominance. They used their game management experience to seal the win.

]]> 19 pro-Iran fighters killed in Syria strikes: monitor https://www.citizen.co.za/news/news-world/19-pro-iran-fighters-killed-in-syria-strikes-monitor/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523851 Air strikes in eastern Syria “likely” launched by Israel killed at least 19 pro-Iran fighters Saturday, a war monitor said, reporting three more dead in the country’s north.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “19 pro-Iranian fighters, including four Syrians, and six Iraqis, were killed and more than 18 were wounded” in at least nine air strikes overnight near the Iraqi border.

It said the raids were “likely carried out by Israel”, after earlier indicating they were “likely American”.

A US military official, requesting anonymity, said the “US did not conduct any defensive strikes overnight”.

The Observatory said the strikes targeted military positions in Albu Kamal and its surroundings in Deir Ezzor province, adding that a weapons shipment from Iraq and an ammunition warehouse were also hit.

ALSO READ: Regime shelling kills seven civilians in Syria

Israel rarely comments on individual strikes targeting Syria, but it has repeatedly said it will not allow arch-foe Iran, which backs President Bashar al-Assad’s government, to expand its presence there.

Later Saturday, the Observatory said that “Israeli missiles targeted warehouses and bases of pro-Iran groups” in northern Syria in an area near the Aleppo airport, killing three fighters and wounding several others.

Syrian state media, citing a military source, said that at around 5:20 pm (1420 GMT), “the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack… targeting a number of points south of the city of Aleppo”, reporting only “material damage”.

During more than a decade of civil war in Syria, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes on its territory, primarily targeting Iran-backed forces including Lebanese Hezbollah fighters as well as Syrian army positions.

But it has intensified attacks since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, as tensions rise across the Middle East.

Iranian state media said an Israeli strike on Monday near Damascus killed Razi Moussavi, a senior commander in the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Strikes in south Syria

Overnight in southern Syria’s Quneitra province, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, “Israeli ground bombardment” killed two fighters from a Hezbollah-linked group, said the Britain-based Observatory.

The pair, “of Palestinian origin”, were “members of a group affiliated with the Syrian Resistance to Liberate the Golan, which works with Lebanon’s Hezbollah”, said the monitor which relies on sources inside war-torn Syria for its reports.

The Israeli army had said early Saturday that it was carrying out strikes in Syria after two rockets fired from the country fell into territory under its control.

The army did not give the precise location where they fell.

Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah movement, which like Hamas in the Gaza Strip is supported by Iran, announced on Saturday the death of four of its fighters “on the road to Jerusalem” — a reference to militants killed in hostilities since October 7.

It was unclear where they were killed.

There have been regular cross-border exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

The Middle East has also seen a surge in attacks on US forces, which Washington blames on Tehran-aligned armed groups across the region, since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

The majority have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose formation of Iran-linked armed groups which oppose US support for Israel.

]]> Sundowns frustrated by Polokwane City in another stalemate https://www.citizen.co.za/sport/soccer/local-soccer/sundowns-frustrated-polokwane-city-another-stalemate/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 17:59:42 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523894 Mamelodi Sundowns have ground to a bit of a halt at the end of 2023, following up a DStv Premiership goalless draw at Cape Town City with the same result against Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

Masandawana had an effort from Peter Shalulile disallowed in the 72nd minute, but generally battled to break down a well-organised City.

Sundowns’ lack of attacking spark may well have plenty to do with fatigue at the end of the first part of a season that has seen them play in five different competitions.

For many of Sundowns’ players, meanwhile, the action will not stop, as they jet off for the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Two league draws in a row, however, don’t look so bad on the back of 11 straight wins, and defeats for both Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United this weekend give further illustration that it is unlikely anyone is ready to mount a challenge to what looks an inevitable seventh DStv Premiership crown on the spin.

Sundowns dominated possession throughout but were largely kept at bay by a resilient City, though Phuti Mohafe’s side barely registered a threat of their own.

There was a moment of controversy in the first half when Themba Zwane broke onto a long ball and went down under a challenge from Langelihle Ndlovu. Referee Akhona Makalima, however, ruled that there was no foul.

Mokoena tester

Sundowns finally tested Manuel Sapunga in the City goal in the 63rd minute, a free kick from Tebogo Mokoena drawing a good save from the ‘keeper.

Nine minutes later Sundowns thought they had taken the lead as Peter Shalulile slammed home Themba Zwane’s pass and wheeled away in celebration. Makalima appeared to initially give the goal, but eventually ruled it out correctly for a foul by Zwane on Bulelani Nikani.

Consternation on the Polokwane bench was quickly replaced by anger from the Sundowns bench, but the only real question, in the absence of VAR, is exactly where the decision to not give the goal came from.

Rivaldo Coetzee lashed an effort just over in stoppage time, but those Sundowns players who are not going to the Ivory Coast will now be grateful for some rest.

AKA murder investigation: What Cele said…

In his latest effort to dodge the bullets, Cele provided a progress update of the murder investigation to the media in Cape Town on Friday.

According to the police minister, the investigation was now at an advanced stage and it was just “a matter of time” before the culprits would be brought to book.

“The fact that the getaway car was found, the gun itself has been found, some of the witnesses I’m told are in protection order, means it’s a case that has really covered some ground. We just need to get that particular person,” Cele said.

Cele’s recent radio update on AKA case: Spot the difference…or not?

Apart from his reference that the police “just need to get that particular person”, the rest of his update is unfortunately an echo what the minister told Metro FM talk show host Faith Mangope two weeks ago.

“We have found the getaway car, the gun has been found. They have found two people that I know for sure, those people have been kept very safe because they know very well what happened that particular day,” Cele revealed in the interview.

“Those two guys [the witnesses] must be kept very safe because they know what happened on that particular day. Even beyond what happened on that day – about the networks that led to the unfortunate murder of AKA,” he added.

Malema shoots down Cele’s AKA murder update

Cele’s Metro FM interview was slammed by EFF leader Julius Malema as “rubbish”.

What happened on that fatal night when AKA and Tibz were gunned down?

AKA died after he was fatally shot at pointblank range in the back of his head in Florida Road, Durban, on Friday, 10 February. Durban police confirmed the death of the 35-year-old rapper on the scene.

According to IOL, the Mass Country rapper was reportedly standing outside the Wish Restaurant, in Durban’s bustling Florida Road, at about 10pm when he was approached by a gunman who shot him “execution style” before fleeing the scene on foot.

According to media reports, there was a second gunman on the scene and Motsoane, who was with his friend the time, was also tragically shot and killed while the rapper’s bodyguard was wounded.

AKA was due to perform at Yugo nightclub, in Durban, later that evening.

Was AKA’s murder a hit?

In June this year, City Press reported that the police were allegedly investigating members of a family involved in taxi operations, as well as the so-called construction mafia in KwaZulu-Natal.

The publication quoted sources in the security cluster who claimed that AKA and Motsoane were followed from King Shaka International Airport to the popular restaurant.

“The police have already obtained the footage that reveals that there was surveillance by the [alleged] hitmen who later carried out the hit outside Wish restaurant in Durban.”

“This family is powerful and feared,” one of the sources revealed.

Another source went as far as to claim that one of the suspects was also spotted at the crime scene after AKA’s fiancée Anele “Nellie” Tembe plunged to her death from the 10th floor of Cape Town’s Pepperclub Hotel in the early hours of 11 April 2021.

“The person allegedly met with one of the suspects who has been arrested on a different charge and was [allegedly] involved in the shooting,” they said.

The unsolved case of Nellie Tembe: ‘Elements of suspicion of a murder’

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is set to reinvestigate the death of AKA’s former fiancée, Anele ‘Nellie’ Tembe. Photos: Instagram

The Western Cape police stated in December 2021 that it has wrapped up what it labelled a “suicide investigation” into Tembe’s death.

Western Cape police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, however, told City Press at the time that there were “elements of suspicion of a murder” and that the case was referred to the National Prosecuting Agency (NPA) for a decision.

After investigations, the NPA declined in June 2022 to institute any prosecution for Tembe’s death, but in May this year, it made a U-turn on its decision, stating that it will reinvestigate the death of KwaZulu-Natal businessman Moses Tembe’s daughter.

Riveiro’s Pirates lost two of their last matches of the year, losing 3-1 to SuperSport United before wrapping up the year with a disappointing 3-2 loss to Stellenbosch FC after they were 2-0 up in the game at Orlando Stadium on Friday.

But Riveiro says winning the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8 Cup makes them a good side and the last two results don’t really mean that much.

The Spaniard remains hopeful of a successful future for the Buccaneers and believes there is a lot to learn from the past two games.

“We are wrapping up 2023. If you go to the numbers for the entire year, it is a technical thing because some teams didn’t play the same number of games as us. But let’s say we are one of the best teams in 2023 because we won two titles,” said the Buccaneers coach after the match.

“Let’s not dramatise the last two results too much. I have a feeling that we are going to learn a lot from these last two games. I don’t want to sound stupid but it will be something good for us in the future,” he said.

A tale of two halves

Riveiro says his side had a good first half in the match against Stellies. And he thought they had sealed the match up until Stellenbosch managed to pull one goal back which saw them taking charge of the game.

“It was a good and complete first half against a difficult and physical side. I think we created enough chances to get the lead. We managed to contain them at the beginning of the second half but they later dominated us,” he added.

]]> Palmer at the double as Chelsea sink battling Luton https://www.citizen.co.za/sport/soccer/world-soccer/palmer-double-chelsea-sink-battling-luton/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 15:39:14 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523835 Cole Palmer struck twice as Chelsea survived a late scare to banish their away-day blues with a 3-2 win against Premier League strugglers Luton on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were in complete control when Palmer scored his second goal to put the visitors three up with 20 minutes to play.

Palmer had opened the scoring at Kenilworth Road before Noni Madueke doubled Chelsea’s lead late in the first half.

But former Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley netted to spark a spirited finish from third bottom Luton, who scored again through Elijah Adebayo in a dramatic finale.

Chelsea’s second consecutive win was their first success away from home since a victory at Tottenham on November 6, ending a four-game losing streak on their travels.

If that was encouraging for Pochettino, the manner of their late bout of nerves suggested there is still much to work on for an inconsistent team languishing in 10th place.

“I’m so pleased because we need to be great to beat Luton. It’s difficult to play here,” Pochettino said.

“We are a young team. They need to work together to create this trust and confidence.

“This type of result when you need your team-mates to fight with you will be a really good thing.”

On Chelsea defender Thiago Silva’s visible frustration at the final whistle, Pochettino added: “Thiago is like this. He is always moaning and never happy but that is good.”

Pochettino’s first competitive win as Chelsea boss came in the reverse fixture against Luton back in August.

But they have struggled badly since then and arrived at Luton hoping to avoid finishing 2023 with a 20th league defeat in the calendar year.

A self-described “football romantic”, Pochettino admitted this week that he was relishing the opportunity to play against a club who just a few years ago were fighting to avoid extinction in the lower leagues.

But Pochettino also warned his young team they would get a taste of “real football” on their trip to ramshackle Kenilworth Road.

Nestled amid tight rows of terraced houses, Luton’s tiny stadium is the antithesis of the Premier League’s glamour clubs.

Chelsea initially appeared quite at home in their gritty surroundings as they quickly seized the momentum.

Palmer’s early strike was held by Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski, but it was a statement of intent that presaged Chelsea’s opener.

– Predatory Palmer –

Luton were culpable as a poor clearance inside their own area went straight to Palmer, who accepted the gift with a clinical finish into the far corner for his seventh goal since signing from Manchester City in September.

Pochettino had rewarded Madueke with a start after he came on to score the winner against Crystal Palace and the young winger repaid his manager’s faith in the 37th minute.

Picked out by Palmer on the edge of the area, Madueke was allowed too much time by Luton’s defence as he unleashed a fierce strike that flashed into the roof of the net at the near post.

With Chelsea less dynamic in the second half, Christopher Nkunku was sent on for Armando Broja as the Chelsea forward steps up his return to action after a long injury absence.

Palmer appeared to have put the result beyond doubt in the 70th minute when he sprinted onto Jackson’s pass, cleverly rolled the ball around Kaminski and slotted home from close-range.

But Chelsea wobbled with the finish line in sight — Adebayo having a goal ruled out for offside hinted at a Luton revival.

Adebayo then hit the bar with a header before Barkley glanced his header into the far corner from a Luton corner in the 80th minute.

And seven minutes later, Adebayo poked home from virtually on the goalline after Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrovic could only parry Alfie Doughty’s header into his path.

Luton laid siege to the Chelsea goal in the final minutes, but the visitors escaped with a barely deserved victory.

Somizi celebrated his 51st birthday a few days ago. In a lengthy Instagram post on Saturday, 30 December, Bahumi reminisced about one of her nights out on the town with her famous father.

“Posting this video because it’s the only one I can from this night. Before the wigs were sliding off, before you pulled yours out while fans were trying to take pics with you, before my heels were chucked, before words were slurred, this is where it started.

Uvele wathi: Daughter, don’t you wanna hop from marquee to marquee & club to club for vibes?”

“As the responsible parent, I asked, ‘Do we have accreditation?’, Wavele wathi ‘Nope! We’ll see where the night takes us. If they kick us out, it’s their loss,” she wrote.

Bahumi said that evening proved to her that she “made the right choice in heaven”.

Wishing her father a happy birthday, she wrote: “To make it social media official, happy birthday to my ‘Bathong’, my ‘Kulungile Goodbye!’, my knight in glittering armour, the one whom God said ‘these two, definitely,’ whom through it all, we’re still here. @somizi you’re one of a kind.”

]]> Watch out for the living when visiting Joburg cemeteries, says City Parks https://www.citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/watch-out-for-the-living-when-visiting-joburg-cemeteries-says-city-parks/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 12:16:22 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523777 Johannesburg City Parks has warned visitors to grave sites to be careful of criminals operating in the cemeteries.

This comes after complaints on social media and community WhatsApp groups around Soweto about crime at Avalon Cemetery.

Made to sit on graves while being robbed

In a voice note circulating on social media, a woman detailed how she and her family were assaulted at a cemetery by three criminals and made to sit on graves while they were being robbed.

She said after taking money and cell phones the robbers went with one of her relatives to search their car. They then told them that they would take the car key and leave it on one of the graves as they made their escape.

“This was a traumatic thing for us. I would like to warn people not to visit the cemetery during the week, at least go on the weekend when it is busy,” she said.

Be alert

City Parks’ spokesperson Jenny Moodley told The Citizen visitors should be alert.

“Johannesburg has over 42 cemeteries with 38 cemeteries that are dormant and reached its capacity. There have been isolated reports of opportunistic crime that are reported in some of these cemeteries. Families visiting graves in these cemeteries are urged to be vigilant and let SAPS and the security team at the entrance of any suspicious activity or an incident,” Moodley said.

There are four active cemeteries where new burials are held.

“These cemeteries have private security posted at the entrance, which is supported by random patrols by JMPD and the city parks rangers.

“However due to the sprawling expanse of cemeteries and limited resources, it is not feasible to deploy additional personnel to patrol cemeteries,” Moodley said.

Moodley said in some instances the fences around Johannesburg’s cemeteries were cut to gain entry into the graveyard.

“Unfortunately fences in some of the cemeteries have been affected by large-scale theft. City Parks is interrogating alternative options to enhance safety as fences must be complemented with visible policing to deter criminal activity,” Moodley said.

]]> Joburg DA plans to call for fresh municipal elections in 2024 https://www.citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/politics/joburg-da-plans-to-call-for-fresh-municipal-elections-in-2024/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 12:06:02 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523765 DA Joburg caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku says the party will continue the fight for the soul of the city in 2024.

Reflecting on the year that was, Kayser-Echeozonjoku said Johannesburg residents suffered a blow when the DA-led coalition was removed from power earlier in the year, but the party was preparing to introduce a motion at the beginning of next year for a dissolution of council and a call for fresh municipal elections.

Instability in the City of Johannesburg

The removal of Mpho Phalatse in January saw the installation of two new mayors under the multi-party coalition, Government of Local Unity (GLU).

“In 2023, Johannesburg faced a multitude of challenges, and the Democratic Alliance (DA) played a prominent role in addressing several issues that affected the city,” Kayser-Echeozonjoku said.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku said the DA was instrumental in holding the GLU to account. The party also played a role in collapsing a year-end party that would have cost the City more than R2m.

“The DA uncovered plans for a costly R2.6 million year-end party organised by the Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS) department, which was subsequently cancelled following the DA’s intervention.

“This raised questions about the responsible use of public funds and the necessity of such expenditures, prompting a reevaluation of the city’s financial priorities,” she said.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku said the DA had been involved in several key campaigns such as challenging the appointment of the City Manager, a case which is still in court and addressing problems with service delivery especially the issue of lack of refuse collection in the inner City.

“Overall, the DA Johannesburg caucus’s active role in addressing these issues reflects their dedication to promoting good governance, rule of law, fiscal responsibility, and accountability in the management of Johannesburg, as well as their efforts to advocate for the best interests of the city’s residents,” she said.

]]> Ghaaleb stands out at Jebel Ali https://www.citizen.co.za/sport/horses/ghaaleb-stands-out-at-jebel-ali/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 11:49:05 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523794 Jebel Ali host a competitive seven-race card today and Michael Costa, the season’s leading trainer, will be looking to get among the winners, eight days after leaving Meydan empty-handed.

Costa, who has saddled an impressive 13 winners at Jebel Ali this season, is two-handed in the 1400m maiden and Ghaaleb, the choice of Ben Coen, makes the most appeal ahead of the once-raced Ajdayet.

Bred in New Zealand, Ghaaleb showed promise on his racecourse debut at Jebel Ali last month, despite running green and looking inexperienced. He stepped up on that form when staying on to finish a close third behind Haasim under Coen four weeks ago, shaping as he would improve for the race.

The form of the race worked out very well as runner-up Watch My Six and fifth-placed Keffaaf have since won.

ALSO READ: Racing tips: War Of Athena remembered

This is a golden opportunity for Ghaaleb to open his account in a weak event that won’t take much winning.

The highlight on the card is Race 5, the 2024 Cup, a cracking 1600m handicap sponsored by Shadwell.

Hat-trick seeking Delorean, trained by Ahmad bin Harmash, has thrived since switching to dirt and looks the one to beat.

The Time Test gelding, winner of two of his three races at Jebel Ali, has climbed in the ratings and must defy the career-high mark of 91. Simon and Ed Crisford’s runners at Jebel Ali always command respect.

Rabbah Racing-owned Swing Vote, the only three-year-old in the line-up, carries their hopes on his first start since leaving Andre Fabre.

He was lightly raced in France for Godolphin, winning two of his four races and was beaten five lengths by the mighty Ace Impact in a Listed race at Chantilly.

If taking to dirt, he could be potentially well handicapped off a mark of 98. Top-weight Franz Strauss made a pleasing comeback at Meydan and building on that promise on his Jebel Ali debut is one to consider in a decent contest.

ALSO READ: A perfect run required at Standside

Of the others, Justice Protecol, a three-time winner at Jebel Ali is respected, having bounced back to form behind Delorean after being soundly beaten in two runs in the UK earlier in the year.

Race 4, a 1600m conditions race for juveniles, is a modest event and nothing jumps off the page.

The 78-rated Shababy gets a tentative vote on his Jebel Ali debut for South American trainer Julio Olascoaga, who enjoyed Listed success with Atletico El Culano at Meydan last week.

Shababy made an encouraging start to his career when finishing fifth behind Mendelssohn Bay, one of the most exciting two-year-olds seen this winter in the UAE.

He disappointed next time, trailing in 17 lengths behind Killer Collect but he had an excuse, having sustained a wound to his right leg. Half an hour earlier, the 1200m handicap has attracted a big field and Tadhg O’Shea-ridden Shamlaan gets the vote.

Trained by Bhupat Seemar, he caught the eye on his seasonal debut at Jebel Ali four weeks ago, travelling strongly before a lack fitness took its toll in the closing stages and he weakened to finish a respectable fifth.

He’s entitled to strip fitter for the run and has slipped in the ratings.

Haiuao Alarb, one of eight runners for veteran trainer Rashed Bouresly, makes a quick reappearance, six days after finding plenty of pressure to deny Ironside in a driving finish at Sharjah.

He is a lightly raced colt and should have more to offer, provided he has recovered from Sunday’s exertions.

Atlantic Sky, trained by Musabbeh Al Mheiri, is one to consider under top French rider Christian Demuro, an eye-catching booking. He showed improved form behind Major Cinnamon over today’s course last time and should take a step forward.

Unexposed Molaqab, trained by Costa, was formerly trained by William Haggas and won one of his four races for the Newmarket-based handler.

The switch to dirt is an obvious query and if handling the underfoot conditions, he should be in the mix under Coen. Top-weight Gareth can win Race 6, an 1800m handicap.

Trained by Ahmad bin Harmash, he should be fitter for his recent comeback behind Perfect Balance at Sharjah, his first start since March.

ALSO READ: Tony Peter is under fire, but he is also in form

Veteran Untold Secret, trained by Salem bin Ghadayer, hasn’t lost any of his enthusiasm and comes here on the back of a respectable run at Sharjah.

He will need to improve to reverse form with Gareth but over a track he has won four times, he can’t be overlooked in a race not many appeal.

Costa-trained Unexposed My Verse makes her handicap debut and doesn’t look overburdened off a mark of 75.

She has shown minor ability and having only had three lifetime runs she’s open to plenty of improvement, unlike her rivals.

]]> 10 of the most obscure New Year traditions around the world https://www.citizen.co.za/travel/most-obscure-new-year-traditions-around-world/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 11:38:30 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523774 In South Africa on New Year’s Eve, many South Africans light their braais in the afternoon and party in the New Year with their brandy and coke, shooting fireworks at midnight.

However, if you are ringing in the New Year in a foreign country, it might be worth reading up on their specific New Year traditions so you’re not caught off guard if someone stumbles into a bar dressed as a bear.

TravelLocal has revealed some of the lesser-known, obscure New Year’s Eve celebrations around the world, which really do put the South African brandy and braai to shame.

Obscure New Year Traditions around the world

Burning effigies in Ecuador

Ecuadorians like to burn effigies (a model or statue that has been created, usually out of protest) of famous politicians, celebrities and other people associated with the previous 12 months. At midnight, they believe this will bring good luck for the next year and will help to leave behind any negative energies.

The ritual is known as ‘Los años viejos’ (the old years) and is a cause for celebration. While elsewhere on the streets, people dressed as the ‘widows’ of the burned effigies ask passing traffic for money. Though it is light hearted, it is best to carry change if you’re spending time in Ecuador over the new year.

Tossing old furniture out of the window in Naples

Neapolitans like to go one step further when it comes to the mantra of ‘out with the old and in with the new’ at New Year.

Throwing out your old possessions symbolises that you are ready to embrace the fresh year ahead.

Naples residents have reportedly thrown everything from toasters to fridges from their balconies, so packing a helmet could be a good idea if you’re visiting on 31 December.

Eating 12 grapes at midnight in Spain

This tradition dates back to 1909, when there was a grape harvest so big that the King, Alfonso XIII, decided to give out the surplus to the masses to consume on New Year’s Eve.

The ritual is to eat one grape with each of the 12 chimes of the clock, to secure 12 months of health and happiness.

Breaking a plate in Denmark

If you need to get rid of a chipped plate, it might be a good idea to save it until New Year’s Eve in Denmark, to throw it at your friend’s door.

It is thought the more broken plates you discover outside your door, the more good luck you will have in the forthcoming year and the more friends you will have.

Throwing white flowers into the ocean in Brazil

This tradition is seen as an offering to the Goddess of the Sea, Yemanja. Locals carry out this custom, hoping she will grant their wishes for the following year.

Brazillians dress in white, and throw white flowers and candles into the ocean. Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro is a popular spot to witness this traditional practice.

Dressing up as a bear in Romania

One of the most seemingly bizarre New Year traditions across the world, in Romania, locals dress up in bear skins (these are now usually fake), and parade through the streets.

The festival known as ‘Ursul’, is said to be a pre-Christian ritual which is still practised today. It is believed that spotting a bear in your backyard in Romania signifies good luck and wards off evil spirits.

Sprinkling salt on the doorstep, and wearing red underwear in Turkey

In Turkey, people sprinkle salt outside their door at midnight which is believed to bring peace and prosperity into their homes for the year ahead.

For even more good luck, locals are said to buy and wear new red underwear on New Year’s Eve. Red is widely regarded as the colour of luck and good fortune in many cultures, so this colour underwear is worn to welcome in a new and fortunate year.

Sitting under a table, if you’re single in Argentina, Chile or Venezuela

In many Latin American countries, it is traditional for single people to crawl under a table at midnight, to be blessed with good luck in finding love in the new year. Who needs Tinder?

Singles stand in line as if they are about to catch a wedding bouquet, dancing and then crawling on their hands and knees from one end of the table to another. Couples cheer them on, and then adorn them with kisses, hugging and laughing.

Going for a freezing cold dip, in fancy dress, in Edinburgh

On New Year’s Day, thousands of Scots throw on fancy dress and go for a swim in the freezing Firth of Forth at South Queensferry in Edinburgh.

The tradition, known as the ‘Loony Dook’ has taken place since the 80’s, but only recently became part of the famous Hogmanay programme officially.

Melting lead in Germany

In Germany, it’s customary to heat small pieces of lead, then cast them in cold water and make a prediction for the year based on the shapes that are formed.

It’s thrilling to see 4Racing have named a race in her honour after her fantastic achievements on the racecourse of which I was privileged enough to be a part.

For those who don’t know she won the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara with consummate ease (which included the Grade 1 SA Fillies Classic). She also was victorious in the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000, the Grade 2 Ipi Tombe Challenge and the Grade 3 Three Troikas Stakes.

ALSO READ: A perfect run required at Standside

These are some unbelievable races to win and the fact that she was able to do it all, proved what a great filly she was.

Paul Matchett did a wonderful job with her, and her connections were lovely people to ride for.

Overall, it’s brought back some wonderful memories of one of the best fillies I’ve ever ridden.

Last week saw the running of the Betway Lebelo Sprint and Rulership proved too strong once again, remaining undefeated for his new stable.

He looks to be a really promising sprinter and from what I saw, there is still further improvement to come, so he could be in for a big season.

On a personal note, last week was probably my toughest as unfortunately, I did not get into the winners’ box. After many years of riding, I have come to understand this is a truly difficult game and it can go like this.

It’s important through a tough time like this to remain positive and have a strong mind because I know the wheel will turn.

As we come to the end of 2023, it’s the perfect opportunity to thank every trainer and owner for their support through the year and for their continued support through the good and bad times.

I would also like to thank my agent, Tony Jacob, who has done an unbelievable job over the past year. We definitely have our disagreements over certain choices but he has done a lovely job and it’s important he knows I value him.

Reflecting on my year, there have been some great highs, the Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup in particular, and some real lows, but overall, I think this year has made me stronger both mentally and physically.

After certain events, I’ve learned to cherish the game and the winners, and I’ve understood not to take anything for granted.

Of course, family plays the biggest part in any person’s life, but I need to thank my family for their support through everything this year. Without their unwavering support of my travelling daily and the shortage of time spent with them, I would not be able to accomplish what I would like to achieve.

While this time of the year is spent by many enjoying the family festivities, I, unfortunately, continue to travel and work like every other day, and my family understands the need for it and supports me through it, and for that I am grateful.

To all the readers, may you have a superb new year and may it bring you God’s blessings and everything you desire.

Now on to today’s card. Race 1 is a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 800m and I ride King Of Kildare who is a lovely type of horse, and if not too green I’m expecting him to run a really nice race.

There are some expensive and some very well-bred unraced horses and with these races one needs to watch the betting and the horses’ canterpast.

These will be your best guide to their chances. Of the two raced runners, both have shown ability and with natural improvement both can run into the money but Ready Set Fire is my preference.

Race 2 is a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies over 800m and I ride Audacious. She too gives me a really nice feel in the mornings and once again if not too green, I’m expecting a positive run.

Again, there are a number of well-bred unraced horses so watch the betting and the canterpast for a guide.

Of the raced runners, I make Simply Majestic, who ran a lovely race on debut and will have improved from there, the horse to beat. Race 3 is a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1600m and I ride Kadizora who is an extremely well-bred unraced filly who I don’t know much about.

NOW READ: Sprint star Gimme A Prince is a looming danger for King’s Plate

However, with respect to the rest, this doesn’t look like the strongest of fields and if she is above average, she will be able to go close.

My stable companion, Forgiveness, sets the standard after a good last run when stepped up in trip and a repeat of that will see her go close again.

Regal Daughter returns after a small break and has run two good races in her latest two starts, so if close to peak fitness she is the danger.

More Than All ran well on her stable debut and must be respected.

Duchess Of Saville and Say It With Roses both ran decent races on debut and with natural improvement can be expected to run into the money.

Race 4 is a Maiden Plate over 1600m and I ride Callaburn who ran be er in his last two starts and if he continues to progress like that, he can run into the money.

Thunee Playa has run two lovely races and the form of his last start has been franked. He is the horse we all have to beat and has every opportunity to shed his maiden tag.

ALSO READ: Praised be: Sometimes things do go as planned in horseracing

He is my best bet on the card. La Moohal improved last time and looks to be getting better with every run. He is the main danger.

Dark Silver finished off his debut run strongly and with natural improvement can run into the money.

Race 5 is a MR 94 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m and I ride Mary’s Greenlight who was disappointing in her last start after two good wins. She’ll have to return to that form to feature.

We all have On The Horizon to beat, and she looks well above average. She has her third run after a rest and was game in defeat when running over 1800m which could have just stretched her. She drops back to 1600m now which will suit and off a good draw she sets the standard.

Cape Lights is in really good form and gets the benefit of jumping from barrier No 1, which is always so beneficial. She should get the run of the race and rates the main danger.

Bonika ran another really good race last time out and is now 3kg better off with On The Horizon for a two-length beating which should bring them closer together so she should be right there.

Key Element gets blinkers added and that could make a difference, so she must go into wider bets. Race 6 is a Pinnacle Stakes over 1160m and I ride Coldhardstare. She carries just 50kg and on that alone, I think she will run into the money.

We are, however, worse off at the weights with Mrs Browning even though she beat us last time out and on that, it should be hard to reverse the form. Mrs Browning carries just 50.5kg after winning the Magnolia Handicap last time out and rates a definite danger. She must go into all bets.

Dyce is giving away loads of weight but still remains best weighted after a scintillating victory last time out. He absolutely demolished a strong field and laid down a claim to being the best sprinter around. A repeat of that performance will make him hard to beat and he could potentially be a banker in smaller bets.

ALSO READ: ‘Shoo-in’ and a ‘dark horse’: How common terms began with horseracing

Chyavana drops back in trip but also has a light weight and is another to consider for wider bets.

Race 7 is the Listed War Of Athena Handicap over 1800m and I ride Crimson Princess who gets the benefit of draw No 2. With a better run in transit, although this is a tough test, I am hoping she can run into the money. I think the three-year-olds could potentially be the fillies to beat.

Witblits has been an absolute revelation since coming up to Joburg and if she continues on that improved trajectory, she is the filly to beat. She has to overcome a wide draw and that’s not easy, but she could still be unexposed over this trip.

Let’s Go Now ran a lovely race in the Fillies Mile and we saw what the winner went on to do in the Mike de Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge, so she rates the main danger.

Bonete ran a far better race, ridden positively last time out and the winner went on to run a head second in the Grade 1 Fillies Guineas, so she must be included in all bets.

Perfect Witness is in great form but it won’t be easy giving the weight away. Tulip Tree has her third run after a rest and should be cherry ripe, so she must go into all bets.

Race 8 is a Middle Stakes over 1400m and I ride Pure Predator who drops in class so on that alone I think he will run into the money. He has always given the impression of being a really good horse and hopefully, he can get back on track.

ALSO READ: There are a few shrewd picks in South Africa for a Fantasy Jockey League

Red Bomber has his third run after a rest and gets the benefit of a good draw. He can travel really strongly so it’s important he settles early in order to finish, but he is one of the main contenders.

Back In Business is a high-class horse who now steps up in trip. He is still unexposed and rates a massive runner.

Tirpitz won a good race last time out and although this is a much stiffer task, he can go into wider bets.

Race 9 is a MR 84 Handicap over 1400m. I ride Richard The First and he is my value bet on the card. He drops drastically in class and his last run in the WSB Grand Heritage was really good. This is the perfect opportunity for him to gain his second career win. Mo The Man gets blinkers fitted and jumps from a good gate, so he is the main danger.

Kotinos won a lovely race last time out and off draw No 1 should be right there at the finish.

Moola Man also ran well last time and can still progress further, so he must go into wider bets.

Pirates were dealt a huge blow in their last DStv Premiership match of the year, with the club leading Stellies 2-0, only to allow the Western Cape side to score three goals in the last 20 minutes of the match at the Orlando Stadium on Friday.

Xoki managed to put the Buccaneers in the lead early in the game from the penalty spot before Evidence Makgopa extended the lead. But Pirates’ players went to sleep allowing Stellenbosch to bounce back.

The Maroons’ first goal came in the 69th minute from Iqraam Rayners, before Devin Titus levelled matters and Andre de Jong sealed the victory for the Carling Black Label Knockout champions.

Hard to take

It’s a loss that is hard to take for Xoki and company, and he hopes the team will forget about what transpired in this match and bounce back stronger next year.

“I have no words for this one. It is very disappointing from us and we have to take accountability for the results and the performance in the second half. I think we had a very good first half, it was a moment of craziness in the last 20 minutes and they punished us,” said the Bucs defender.

“At this level, you can’t be the way we were in those stages where they dominated us and got three goals. It is not the way we wanted to end our year, hopefully we can bounce back from this … we have to. Unfortunately, we have to go into the break with a sombre mood like this one. But it happens, its football and you learn from such moments. Hopefully, it will never happen (losing the way we did) again.”

The Bucs defender extended his heartfelt apology to everyone at the club for the outcome of the match.

“We apologise to all Orlando Pirates supporters, everyone at the club, the stakeholders, technical team. We will pick ourselves up from this one,” he concluded.

The Stormers won the inaugural URC campaign, beating the Bulls 18-13 at Cape Town Stadium, and they hosted last season’s final at home but lost out to Munster. The standards they have set as a team in the URC have seen them earn respect across the board.

During the festive season, John Dobson’s Stormers have again shown their class with impressive back-to-back wins against two-time Champions Cup winners La Rochelle and the Bulls in last weekend’s North-South derby.

‘Team spirit’

Meanwhile, the Sharks seem to have regressed this season while other SA teams such as the Bulls and Lions have improved. The project under Plumtree is yet to take off but he’s aiming to mirror what the Stormers have done.

“I can’t speak highly enough about the Stormers. It has taken a couple of years to get into this spot they are in through a lot of hard work from their coaching team and management. They are probably a lot of envy for a lot of teams in this competition,” said Plumtree.

“They have built what most teams envy. The boys down there play for each other and they appear to have a team spirit; the leaders lead. They have got physicality, they have got blend to their game and some outstanding backs.

“They have a plan they believe in, and they fight for 80 minutes, as we saw against La Rochelle. That shows you what type of group they have got, and that’s where we want our squad to be.”

On Saturday the Sharks will get the chance to test themselves against the Stormers at Cape Town Stadium in their last URC clash of the year.

Stormers fortress

The Sharks’ season has not yet gained momentum as they have lost six out of seven matches, and they are second from bottom in the points table.

A win against a brilliant Stormers side will be able to launch their campaign. However, Plumtree knows this won’t be an easy feat as the Stormers are a formidable side at home.

“It’s an opportunity. We are underdogs, but so are most teams that go down to Cape Town,” Plumtree said.

“That fuels them, they know that and that makes them better. That’s what quality teams are made up of.”

Police said they were notified of a murder near Willows Clinic on Saturday morning and found a 37-year-old woman with stab wounds on her neck.

The woman reportedly told her sister she and her daughter had been stabbed by a man alleged to be a prophet. Her 20-year-old daughter was also found dead in the sitting room half naked with a stab wound and signs of being raped. She was certified dead as well.

The woman’s five-year-old younger brother was found tied with tape in his room.

She allegedly consulted with the man because of his claims to be a prophet.

“Preliminary investigation was conducted, resulting in the suspect being traced at his girlfriend’s place in the Oaks. Unfortunately, he was not found there, but was tracked successfully at the hiking spot along the road. He was then arrested swiftly and detained at Hoedspruit police station.

“The motive behind the killing is unknown at this stage,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba

The alleged prophet is expected to appear in the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court.

Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the arrest.

“We commend the police for reacting promptly to arrest the suspect masquerading as a prophet. All these men tormenting and killing women in our respective spaces must be isolated and subjected to a criminal justice system.

“This will send a strong warning that anyone who torments women and children, irrespective of their social standing in society, will be dealt with accordingly,” Hadebe said.

]]> Suzuki makes it official: Jimny and Swift not getting Toyota versions https://www.citizen.co.za/motoring/suzuki-closes-speculation-on-swfit-and-jimny-getting-toyota-equivalents/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 10:10:00 +0000 https://www.citizen.co.za/?p=3523383 Suzuki’s Maruti division in India has ended years of lingering speculation as to whether its partnership with Toyota will be expanded to include badge engineered version of the Jimny and Swift at some stage.

No chance

A joint venture signed four years ago, the partnership has so far resulted in the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Starlet/Glanza, Rumion and Belta based on the Suzuki Grand Vitara, Baleno, Ertiga and Ciaz respectively, while in Europe, the Swace estate and Across are revised versions of the Corolla Touring Sports and RAV4.

Soon to spawn an overall seventh model, the much-delayed Urban Cruiser Taisor spun-off of the Suzuki Fronx, neither the Swift nor the Jimny will be receiving a Toyota badged equivalent soon despite a new report alleging talks for this to happen had indeed taken place.

According to a supposed Maruti Suzuki source, “Toyota wanted to badge engineer the Jimny and Swift, but we politely declined”.

In making the announcement to Autocar India, the source said the eventual decision stems from the Swift and Jimny being “at the heart of our brand are not meant for sharing”.

“It’s like asking Toyota to let us badge engineer the Land Cruiser,” the source concluded.

Partnership focus now

A partnership that has seen the Starlet trade places with the Swift for the best-selling non-South African made vehicle accolade for years, the confirmation from India comes on the back of a report last month alleging Toyota working on a production version of the Compact Cruiser concept without any Suzuki involvement.

Tentatively called the Land Cruiser FJ based on a trademark submission uncovered in Japan, the newcomer, teased in 2017 by the FT-4X Concept that morphed into the Compact Cruiser four years later, has so far remained an otherwise unknown entity after being teased in a presentation document at the launch of the new Land Cruiser Prado in August.

While likely to be detailed in teasers over the coming months, focus now shifts to the Urban Cruiser Taisor that will debut in the first half of 2024 as Toyota’s smallest SUV below the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which does without the latter suffix in South Africa as a result of lacking the hybrid powertrain available in India.

More to come

The announcement of the Jimny, and therefore also the Swift, will result in the Taisor becoming the smallest SUV Toyota will sell in India, while the Glanza, known locally as the Starlet, will retain its standing as the marque’s entry-level non-SUV or crossover model.
