Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller have a very special experience in common: the two world champions celebrated their international debut together on 3 March 2010: in the 0-1 World Cup friendly against Argentina, Kroos came on as a substitute for Müller in the 67th minute of the match. One has now played 112 and the other 129 international matches for Germany.
Only at this European Championship it could not be otherwise: Kroos graduated at the DFB So far, all four European Championship matches have started, while Müller played just fifteen minutes in the 5-1 win over Scotland in the opening match. Since then, the Bayern professional has been waiting in vain for another substitution at this tournament.
Müller: “Then maybe we wouldn’t want that after all.”
Together they discussed their careers in a DFB video. Half an hour of entertainment at its best, the association calls the format ‘bromance’.
At one point in the video, Kroos says that Müller will become a coach later on. And he revealed at the very end, in a very funny moment, that he really thinks like a coach.
It was a possible substitution in the quarter-finals of the European Championship Spain – together on the grass field for the last time. Suddenly Müller noticed: “That would mean we might need a goal,” he stammered suddenly and smiled mischievously. “Then maybe we wouldn’t want to do that after all,” he added, scratching the back of his head sheepishly.
And what’s more: Thomas Müller, together with Chris Führich, is one of the professionals who only intervenes when nothing works anymore. In other words: when there is a backlog.
He notices this immediately when he speaks and puts into words what coaches say: “It would be better to replace the three central defenders. Then Germany would lead – and defend the result.” Without Muller.
