When it comes to subtle signs and symbols, you might not necessarily think of upside-down pineapples. But as the British newspaper “Mirror” reports that the downward-facing exotic fruit has a piquant meaning in some context.

On cruises, the upside-down pineapple is a secret sign of swinging or partner swapping.

According to experts, these exotic fruits are often seen on cruise ships, where they appear next to bedroom doors or on Hawaiian shirts to appeal to like-minded vacationers. This phenomenon has now become so widespread that it is widely accepted among the swinging community.

Swinging is a form of open relationship where two couples come together and exchange their partners for sexual activities. “Placing an upside-down pineapple on the cabin door is the most obvious way people indicate they are open to swinging,” according to the Mirror, stating “Cruise hive“.

But there are other symbols that can indicate non-monogamous behavior. Black rings, anklets or even a tub of Tide detergent on the windowsill are among the less obvious symptoms, the Mirror reported. Other, more specific signals and trends may emerge in local circles.
