Tottenham would be right to decline Everton’s request to waive the £10million signing fee for Dele Alli amid their ongoing dispute.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Spurs and Rangers defender Alan Hutton was baffled that the Toffees reportedly accused Tottenham of exploiting their financial struggles to get Richarlison under his £80million valuation.

Should Alli play seven more games for Everton, they will be obliged to fork out the eight-figure fee to bring him to Goodison permanently, but amid their financial woes and points deduction, they’d struggle to afford it.

In light of the Toffees’ claim, the relationship between the club could be damaged meaning Everton may be unable to renegociate the deal for Alli.

Hutton feels Spurs are right to commit to the original proposal for their out-of-form former star.

“I don’t understand how it gets to that situation,” he told Football Insider.

“Obviously Spurs signed Richarlison for that amount and the payments would be agreed over a number of years – that’s been agreed.

“So I don’t understand how you can go back and forth like that and be unhappy.

“If I was Tottenham, I’d do the same thing. If Everton aren’t unhappy because of some clause or instance, I’d just say the Dele Alli negotiation is off the table and that they’d need to pay us the money.

“It’s a little tit-for-tat and I can see how it arises. If you’ve got that leverage, you’re going to use it.”
