Actually you should have learned all the signs at driving school. However, there are many traffic signs on German roads that even experienced drivers are not familiar with.

Road sign with cross

A black You might think this indicates a road closure or danger. But instead it refers to a well-known rule: right before left. The traffic sign is intended to remind motorists coming from a busy area where different priority rules apply of this rule.

Road sign with red dot

On busy country roads and highways you sometimes see small white signs with a red dot. Where do they lead? They are part of the ‘red route’ and indicate the fastest route to the next highway with the same destination. In the event of a traffic jam or other road closures, travelers must be quickly diverted to their destination. They work the same way as the sign with the orange arrow.

The orange round signs with black numbers and arrows on them are a remnant of the past. They are often separated by a black line in the middle. Each half has a number and arrows pointing up or down. If you want to know the meaning of the signs, you have to pay close attention to where they are placed: they are actually only found on bridges. They indicate the maximum weight with which military vehicles can cross the bridge. Hence their name: MLC boards. MLC stands for ‘Military Cargo Classification’. Some also call them NATO bridge signs because they were installed by the military alliance during the Cold War.
