An 18-year-old has died after being struck by lightning on Germany’s highest mountain. According to police reports, the young man drove with two other men from North Rhine-Westphalia to the Zugspitze (2,962 meters) and walked to the summit of the Zugspitze, not far from the terrace of the mountain station. On the way back – less than 80 meters – lightning struck several times and violently in the area around the summit on Sunday.
Helicopter cannot fly due to storms
The 18-year-old from a community in the Viersen district was fatally injured. His companions were taken in by the crisis intervention service. Various media reported on it earlier.
The storm made rescue attempts difficult. A helicopter could not fly and the Zugspitzbahn could not drive. It was said that the rescue was only possible with delay – also because lightning struck several times in the area around the mountain station and the summit.
