Toronto
Heavy rain has flooded streets in the Canadian city of Toronto and caused power outages in many places. Firefighters rescued 14 people from their cars on Don Valley Parkway on Tuesday (local time), the Canadian Press reported. Photos showed vehicles submerged up to their roofs.
Firefighters also freed people trapped in elevators and other rooms, the report said. There were no initial reports of injuries or major damage.
The rain also affected several arterial roads and Union Station, a major transportation hub in the city. In the Greater Toronto Area, which was also hit by heavy rains, flooding occurred in many communities, with parts of streets and highways suddenly submerged and many cars abandoned, the Canadian Press reported.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow was alarmed, according to the news agency: “We really need to take climate change seriously, because days like this are going to happen a lot more often,” she told reporters. In light of the storm, she said flood prevention measures must now be reviewed.
