Rachel Reeves has swapped the portrait of Margaret Thatcher’s chancellor for that of one of the founding members of the British Communist Party.

The Treasury released a photo of the Chancellor in her office at number 11 with a new portrait of Ellen Wilkinson behind her.

Ms Wilkinson, a former Labor education minister, was a founding member of the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1920 before becoming a Labor MP.

Photographs of Jeremy Hunt And Rishi Sunak at the same office in Downing Street, show that a photograph of Nigel Lawson previously hung on the wall.

Asked about the exchange of portraits, a Treasury spokesperson replied: “Change.”

It comes after Ms Reeves said she would replace all images in State Room No. 11 with paintings “of a woman or woman”.

Meanwhile, a budget promotional video posted on Ms Reeves’ social media this evening had a spelling error.

Purple text in large letters on one video read “tough decisions” instead of “difficult decisions.”

Ms Reeves will tomorrow become the first female chancellor to hold a Budget when Labor makes its first in 15 years.
