The New England Patriots find themselves in an ideal position heading into the 2024 NFL Draft.

With the No. 3 overall pick in hand, the Patriots could attack the quarterback position, hoping to gain consistency for the first time since Tom Brady left.

While this might seem like the obvious answer for the Patriots, especially since they’ve struggled at the position for a few years now, Willie Colon isn’t so sure that this is in their best interest.

Colon said in a recent segment of The Carton Show that “if you start a young quarterback, it will set you back another five years.”

This has been a growing trend in the NFL.

Teams that have a top-five pick tend to take quarterbacks early and start them in their rookie year, and while it occasionally works out right away, oftentimes, their rookie years don’t go according to plan.

Take Bryce Young, for example.

Young was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the Carolina Panthers had the worst record in the league in 2023.

The team wasn’t ready to have a rookie at the helm, and the team suffered as a result.

If the Patriots don’t feel that they are ready to move forward with a rookie, as Colon indicates, they might have better luck trading back, allowing a later first-round QB a year or two to sit behind a veteran and learn the ropes of the NFL.

Fans are interested to see how it’ll all pan out over the next few days, as the Patriots are running out of time to make a decision.
