MIAMI. The criminal trial against Former US President Donald Trump (Republican) on charges of taking secret government documents has been stopped. The responsible judge in Miami, Aileen Cannon, justified this with doubts about the legality of the appointment of the special investigator in the case. This could end the process before it begins. The decision can be appealed.

Trump was charged in federal court in the US state of Florida with allegedly storing confidential documents from his time as president at his private estate in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, and obstructing FBI efforts to get the papers back to Washington.

In her ruling, Cannon followed Trump’s lawyers’ request to halt the proceedings. Cannon himself was appointed by Trump in 2020 as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Florida. (st)
