Nine dead and fifty injured during election campaign in Mexico

At least nine people were killed when a stage collapsed due to high winds at a campaign rally in Mexico.

A child was among the dead, the governor of the northeastern state of Nuevo León, Samuel García, said on the X platform. At least 50 people were injured.

The accident occurred at a baseball field in the municipality of San Pedro Garza García. “I regret the accident in San Pedro Garza García,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador wrote on X.

Presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Maynez of the small center-left party Movimiento Ciudadano was on stage with a mayoral candidate and other people when the accident occurred. He was unharmed. Videos circulated on social media showing the structure falling on the public and panic breaking out. Presidential, parliamentary and regional elections will take place in Mexico on June 2.
