For years, people didn’t know what to expect from the New England Patriots in the NFL Draft.
Bill Belichick ran a tight ship and made most of — if not all of — the decisions, and he was almost impossible to read and predict.
Notably, that also led to some head-scratching picks that eventually backfired, but the fact of the matter is that the Patriots were usually a bit of a wild card.
That’s no longer the case.
With Belichick out, de facto GM Eliot Wolf is a little more transparent.
As pointed out by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Wolf confirmed that the Patriots are currently open for business and would consider trading back from No. 3 at the right price.
#Patriots de facto GM Eliot Wolf told reporters today:
— He’s open to a trade out of No. 3: “We’re open in the first round or any round.”
— If the answer is picking one of the top four QBs at No. 3: “I think we’d be comfortable with it.”— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 18, 2024
However, if they don’t find an offer that suits their asking price for that pick, they’re also more than comfortable taking one of the top-four quarterbacks with that pick.
Truth be told, that’s exactly how they should approach this draft.
The Patriots are a flawed team and need more help, and no quarterback will be able to make an impact if he doesn’t have someone to throw the football to.
That’s why they could use multiple selections and still get a franchise quarterback, whether it’s this year or next.
If that’s not the case, they could allow whoever they get to develop by staying behind Jacoby Brissett for at least half a season.
The Patriots are ready to move on into a new era, and a lot of their success could depend on what they do on April 25.
