The Patriots’ front office is beginning the potentially slow rebuilding process, hiring a first-time head coach in Jerod Mayo while looking to the 2024 NFL Draft to replenish their roster.

One need for New England will be at the quarterback position as the team traded away former starter Mac Jones in March for additional draft picks.

With the No. 3 pick in the draft, NFL analyst Charles Davis believes the Patriots should be looking at options beyond USC’s Caleb Williams and LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

His answer as to which quarterback New England should select is North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.

NBC Sports Boston on Friday posted a video to Twitter of Davis discussing how “beyond impressed” he was with Maye.

Davis said that he was not concerned by critics who believe Maye’s mechanics could be an issue because Maye looked to make throws that were not advisable or extend plays when he should not have.

The analyst went on to compare Maye’s college teammates to another NFL quarterback’s collegiate arsenal.

Matt Ryan, who starred for Boston College in the mid-2000s, was surrounded by a less-than-stellar wide receiver corps, according to Davis.

That same principle applies to the Tar Heels’ stable of receivers, Davis said.

Maye is not a popular choice with most fanbases, and both USC’s Caleb Williams and Daniels – players that each won the Heisman Award over the past two seasons – are more celebrated athletes.

Davis is convinced that Chicago will draft Williams with the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.

Washington owns the No. 2 pick, and Davis believes the Commanders will choose Daniels at the position.
