1999 – A canyoning accident near Interlaken, Switzerland, kills 21 adventurous vacationers who are caught in a flash flood during a storm.

1964 – The German Bundesbank begins issuing 1,000-mark notes. These are the first banknotes of this value since the introduction of the Deutsche Mark in June 1948.

1949 – The world’s first jet aircraft, the De Havilland “Comet”, makes its maiden flight in England.

1794 – In Paris, French revolutionary Maximilien de Robespierre is overthrown and beheaded the next day.
