Kylian Mbappé (25) was on the receiving end of a violent challenge from Lilian Brassier (24) during Paris Saint-Germain’s Coupe de France victory over Stade Brestois, however, the early signs indicate that the France captain has avoided a serious injury.

Brassier saw red for the tackle on the PSG forward, receiving a second yellow having been booked earlier in the tie. Whilst the studs-up challenge looked worrying, especially on the replays, the Frenchman nonetheless played through until the end of the fixture.

Reports from Le Parisien and Foot Mercato suggest that Mbappé is set to announce that he will move to Real Madrid at the end of the season, and within this context, the Spanish press reacted furiously to what they described as a “criminal” tackle from Brassier, who has been a stand-out performer in this impressive Brest side.

There was concern on Thursday morning after RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins announced that Mbappé was absent from PSG training, just two days before a crucial fixture against Lille OSC and less than a week before a UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against Real Sociedad.

Hawkins added that no risks were being taken with Mbappé, pointing out that like many of those who started Wednesday’s match against Brest, he had remained inside and did work in the gym. A more complete diagnosis is expected on Friday.

However, Mbappé’s national team coach, Didier Deschamps, has suggested that there is no problem with his captain’s ankle. “It’s all good on that front. There is no concern. It’s fine,” said Deschamps in a mixed-zone interview on Thursday evening.
