E-scooter accident statistics: more deaths, more injuries

The number of e-scooter accidents resulting in bodily injury rose significantly last year. The death toll also rose.

BERLIN rt | The number of e-scooter accidents resulting in bodily injury rose significantly last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the police recorded a total of 9,425 of these accidents in Germany in 2023 – 14.1 percent more than the previous year.

A total of 22 people died, Destatis announced on Friday. The number of deaths has doubled compared to 2022, when eleven people died in accidents involving e-scooters.

In 2023, 1,220 people were seriously injured and 8,911 were slightly injured. 83.0 percent of the injured were themselves traveling with a small electric vehicleincluding 21 of the 22 fatalities.

As Destatis also reports, 41.6 percent of e-scooter drivers who had an accident last year were under 25 years old and 80.4 percent were under 45 years old. In contrast, only 3.4 percent of e-scooter users who were involved in an accident with bodily injury were in the 65+ age group.
